Golf Random Irritations

What is interesting is that at my club the money from competitions etc are done via the pro shop. However if you get a 2 or winnings then it is put on the pro shop account where you can just ask what the balance is. Seems some what outdated to hand out actual vouchers.

That’s how we work

Any vouchers or twos money just get added to your account in the pro shop

To the best of my knowledge I don’t know of one person who buys vouchers from the shop. When he first opened he was competitive. Not so now. A PP was fitted for some Cobras about three years ago, he paid just south of £1,000 for what he bought ( irons and a wood if memory serves me right).Three weeks later the new models came out and his clubs dropped about £350. He was livid with the pro for not saying the new ones were coming within a month. He was just as mad with himself for not doing proper research.
As much as I as your pro shop set up sounds horrific and fleecing people , this situation is firmly on your all for not doing his research.

I play with 2 guys at a weekend. Decent guys but one is tight. I've booked 2 opens for next year, two of the more, comparatively, expensive ones. One guy pays me within seconds of booking. The other..........

I've tried subtlety but today I've had to be blunt. It's a real shame, I shouldn't have to do that. It puts me off inviting him but it would be awkward if we didn't and played almost behind his back. Disappointing.

Ask him to take his turn to book and give him the old taste of his own medicine!

I ask the tight ones if they want to play an open.
They need to pay before I book so it’s yes and here’s the money or it’s a no.

I had a similar thing booking Spain for a few ‘newbies’ next year. I normally go with a society and someone else books it, he always moans about the headache of getting people to pay, and so I should’ve known better thann to take the lead on this new one!

When I say new, it’s some old school friends for a 50th next year, never been abroad with any of them. Sorted out the golf and accommodation no problem in readiness for flights to be released a few months later. Came to the flights, right lads, flights will be out in a couple weeks so I’ll need the money sharpish after that, it’ll be about £xxx. Flights released, this is the price, send me your money please. Ended up waiting about a week for the stragglers, by that time the price had increased by about £30. Not a massive amount in the grand scheme of things, but next time I’ll book the quick payers straight away, and the stragglers can pay the higher price, sod em!

The tricky bit is if it's a popular open and you need to book quickly you can't do that. I'll have to think differently in future, perhaps do what you suggest before the places are actually released, get the money upfront. It's a real shame 😞

Is he even aware that he is slow in paying?
Have you tried explaining to him that he is a pain to get the money out of?
If the answer to both the above is yes then tell him next time he is slow paying is the last time he gets invited.

That all sounds very simple but I don't want to cause bad feeling in our otherwise very happy and stable Saturday 3 ball. I get it, he has now caused bad feeling but I don't want to do the same.

It may be a bridge we have to broach at some point.

Point him in the direction of the forum.
Unless you are actually 4 foot tall he will never recognise you.
It is a tough one but he is the one causing the problem.
It’s not an easy position to be in and you can easily come out looking the bad guy.

I have just stopped booking them.
When the lads asked why ? I told them.
Don’t think the others were aware of the problem.

I suggested we all put £200 in a bank account and I would use that to book.
No takers except the one who paid straight away .

I organised a 4-man team competition away day at a course where I used to live close to. I did this for several years. It was very popular, so it was booked many months in advance, and paid in full.

Two guys paid as soon as they could.

The other guy thought it was perfectly OK to pay on the day, and even then he forgot to bring the money once.

It annoys you every week when you see them and they don't cough up - it got to the point where I think he actually enjoyed annoying me so much.

That was it for me, I said someone else could book it - that's the last time we went.

I much later found out that this guy, who got a lift into and from the club every week for twenty-five+ years from a friend of mine (who had to go out of his way to pick him up), never even once bought him a single cup of tea or coffee, never mind a beer, as a thank you.

I know I have told this story a few years back on here. But I took over the running of the Xmas party’s at the pit. I would pick a nice place and the lads would duly pay up. The guy I took over from who retired ( Dangerous Brian). He told me “ you end up chasing people up for money because they don’t want to pay until the last minute.it causes loads of headaches”. Guess who was the only person to pay a couple of days before the party. Dangerous Brian. When I told him he thought it was funny and didn’t apply to him as “ I always knew he was coming”. 🫣
The following year I never told him about the party and he ended up chasing me up to get a place. I told him you are in as soon as you pay. The following day he called into the pit to pay.
