Golf Random Irritations

I get your issue, but I totally understand theirs as well. There need to be flexibility from both parties ideally as much as it may annoy you as you can only play weekends they equally may not be able to play those as they have other commitments and don’t feel it’s unreasonable to ask for a weekday. You’ve both got a point and neither is right or wrong.

I’ve got a job but in a summer knockout I don’t find it unreasonable to expect to play a few matches on weekdays after work.

Our KO competition terms are clear that you must be offering weekend dates, if you can’t play weekends you shouldn’t enter, so I think it unreasonable not make yourself available for any of them.

Then that’s fair enough. Wasn’t clear in your initial post that this is essentially a weekend only comp, if that’s the case and he can’t accommodate that under the rules of the event he shouldn’t have entered.

I can do now in the WFH era, but pre-Covid I was working in London every day and getting home at 6:30pm. Would've had no chance of playing weekdays then. I'm sure plenty are still in that boat now so I wouldn't knock anybody for only being able to play weekends.

Play before work, play after work, have a day/half day off?
Not everyone gets that much holiday, I wouldn't expect someone to book time off unless an absolute last resort. If you've got a month that's 8-10 potential Saturdays & Sundays to explore first. I'd be in shock if someone in possession of a 7-day golf membership couldn't actually play any weekends in a month.

I’m not knocking them. I just don’t think it unreasonable in summer knockouts to expect the odd round played in the evenings after work. Unless as stated in the OP knock rules games must be made at weekends then that’s fair enough, I know for a fact this summer and every summer for a while I can’t do every weekend so when I have my knockouts I’ll offer 2 weekends and the opportunity for a weekday evening.

Agreed I wouldn’t expect someone to take leave to play a round of golf at our home club in a knockout. It’s a waste of a days leave and sure something better can be arranged.

Comp rules state at least 2 weekend dates must be offered since I offered them all I guess he needs to accept one.

We won’t be spinning a coin even if I need to stand on the tee at 10am on the last day to claim it.
You are in the right according to the rules of the comp.
You are within your rights to offer him the choice then it’s down to him but do keep all correspondence in case he kicks off.

What would stop someone playing at a weekend ?

Our KOs have rules that say you must be prepared to play at the weekend
There are some weekends I wouldn’t be able to play (not every weekend).
I think it’s fairest when the first drawn out player has to offer 3 dates including 1 weekend and 1 weekday (if the 2 can’t agree a date).

For me it’s family and work. Work is now becoming less at weekends due to changing role but I have my kids every other weekend so that rules out 2 weekends in every 4.

That what I do and it has always worked well and never had issues.

We have had to put the rule in about weekends because some 5 day members would enter then refuse to play at the weekend

I think the competition should only be open to 5 day members if they are willing to play at the weekend (and pay a fee if appropriate).
The other option would be to have separate knockouts one at weekends only and one weekday only if the numbers made sense to do this

This is part of the reason why I’m not entering any matches this year, it’s either the shenanigans of trying to arrange the match, or having to give the oppo 16 shots and being out driven on every hole with a 3 wood! Can’t remember the score exactly but I think I was +1 over gross after 7 holes (I was off approx 14/15 at the time) but 4 down! Played out of my skin and lost with 5 to play.

I’m not bitter at all!
