Golf Random Irritations

Having your ball played by someone else on a different hole...probably.
Hit my drive on our 9th (our last)..a bit too left but should either be in the bunker or beyond it in the tree line....
There are players going down the 1st which runs alongside in the opposite direction.
There's a slight crest on our fairway so you can't normally see your ball land.
We get to the area and start loo,ING...not in the bunker so must be in the tree line....nowhere in sight....
CVG spots a ball 40 yards further down a d right of my line....maybe it hit a tree and bounced out like Fragger's would....
No, not mine...a Callaway but a Supersoft not a Chrome Tour X...
Then I realise what has likely happened...
The Old Boys comp was in full swing and the 3 ball on the first where part of it..
One of them drove a bit left off the 1st into the tree line....lost sight of the ball...walked up, found a Callaway and thought "that's mine" and played it...
His ball was on our fairway.....by the time this scenario clicked in it was way too late and I just finished there....it wouldn't have affected the score to any great extent...

JUST BLOODY ANNOYING!!!!!
I've mentioned this before............
Playing 11 my mate hits it down 12, we know where it is and set off after it, but a senile old codger beats us too it and stands guard over it as if it is the crown jewels. My mate asks him if that is his ball and without looking replies, yes. Not believing him but not wanting to end up with egg on his face he lets it go and has a look around for his ball.
Meanwhile, I watch the SOC hit the ball 100 yards down the fairway into the very light righthand rough, I then watch as he and his mates wander down the fairway, have a good look at the ball and then wander on, without playing it.
On our way up 12 I make a point of going up to the spot where the SOC left the ball and sure enough there is my mate's ball.
Ignorant doesn't really do it justice, but I can't repeat what was really said. I also can't tell you what he writes on his ball these days.

And another thing...

Long-standing members not ringing the bell on a blind tee shot hole...love standing around doing nothing.... 🤬
We've got bells at the 7th Green and down the 9th fairway to be wrung after 2nd (or 3rd) shots are played, it's very common when you're closely following a group for a few holes for them to 'forget' to ring them, gives them a wee bit more leeway i assume, but it's very, very annoying 🤨

Blame the seniors Ali. 🤣

Same at our 17th.
They hold you up all day then say in the house “ you were nowhere near us”😳

And another thing, they hold you up all the way round than play the last 2 or 3 holes like they've got a rocket up their jacksy, then in the clubhouse tell you it was a bit slow going out there today, wonder why the hell that was 😡🤬

Whoooo fun fun fun at my place at the weekend. 32, THIRTY TWO played in our Captains Day. 🙄

Back at a club I was involved with in Surrey about 10 years ago, nine people played in the event. Everyone knew the guy was a cheat and a piece of :poop: but the former captain chose him to be his VC. A separate roll-up was organised an hour later with around 40 people in it. The guy did not last out the year.

Our place is hosting the County Championships over the next two Saturdays. I suppose it’s an honour for the club, but it means the course is closed to members both days.

There was a list of course courtesies, but nowhere near enough to accommodate those who were looking for a game, plus most of them were mid afternoon tee times as clubs understandably don’t want to give up morning slots.

Must be very frustrating for the lads who are working and only play at weekends.

Some in my place have recently having such a discussion - what with our Open on a Sunday and the England U18s taking four days including all of one weekend. Quite a few courtesies but many taken by the usual suspects - and they include many who are weekday as well as weekend golfers. Thinking was that when course is closed for a Sat and/or Sunday, then weekend courtesies should be aimed at those whose golf is primarily weekend as they are still working.

Doubt the idea will get much, if any, traction within the club.

We won’t host the county anymore - course taken away form member for 2 days and other clubs offering very little rounds

I’m surprised your club is allowed not to ‘host the county’. It is normally a condition of affiliation, unless your club, of course, is happy to disaffiliate.

There are multiple clubs that don’t host county events - we only hosting this year because it was our centenary , each club has the right to turn down hosting county events and we have done multiple times in the past.
It is normally (I would suggest always) a condition of affiliation that clubs are required to host events.
If every club refused every time and took this attitude then it would be the end of amateur golf at a county, regional and national level.

People pay a lot of money these days to be members of a golf club , it’s not cheap , and as a members club or priority is to the members and that means not closing the whole course for a whole weekend during prime golf season

If the county want to ensure clubs are willing to host events then they need to ensure other clubs within the county open their doors during these events

But do you know why they don’t - because their priorities once again is to their members

We got little to no benefit with hosting the events

We pay money to be affliated to county and England golf , those clubs give them vital income , they aren’t going to remove affiliation

Again, if all clubs took that attitude then no representative events would ever take place - hence it is in the terms of affiliation - please read them.

Where else would County matches, Championships (Junior, Senior, Men’s, Women’s, Girls etc.) take place? Just look at the long list of fixtures and comps on your County’s website (all hosted by affiliated member clubs). Also regional and National matches and Championships.
Counties, Regions and National associations do not own courses (with the exception of EG and Woodhall Spa) so these events have to be held at affiliated member courses.

The good news is there are some clubs with two courses that are more than happy to host them

We don’t host any county matches because the county manager in the past said our course wasn’t tough enough or long enough

So they can enjoy playing elsewhere and why the best player in the country moved his home club away from us to be an away player

We will look after our members - the ones that pay the bills , and most don’t give too hoots about the county and their self importance
