Golf Monthly Twitter poll.

Ok, you would loose.

The average 18 handicapper is on or around the green in regulation but is an 18 handicapper because of what happens next.
A pro driving and playing approach shots would give the pair more putts for birdies - 80- 90% of the time

An 18 HC driving and approach shots would mean 80% of the time chipping or playing 3rd shots into the green

Do not talk daft. An average golfer hitting a score of about 85 hits 5 GIR per round! Patrick Reed is currently at about 83% or 15 per round.
Golf is a game were we play the fewest shots over the greater distance.

Ok take your example that is ten shots fewer tee to green do you really think an 18 handicapper would then be as close as 10 shots from there in.

Remember 80% of people agree with me.

Who would win?

Team a) Pro hitting tee shots and approaches, 18 handicapper chipping and putting, or

Team b) 18 handicapper hitting tee shots and approaches, pro chipping and putting.

So far 82% of people of Twitter have said B)

Those people are wrong.

Views.
Agree A imo is correct, in scenario A I can't see the 18 handicapper chipping much and would more than likely also have chances of birdie putts.
Intrigued to understand why such a high percentage would choose scenario B

In my post, we're taking stats on an average length course for an average golfer and on a PGA Tour spec course for the Pro. Put the pro on the average course and I reckon their GIR will be more like 16 or 17 holes. Now you start also taking into account the distance the Pro would be from the hole. On the PGA tour you're looking at an average of about 20-15 yards for distance from the hole for approach shots, but that they'll probably drop to be no more than 10 yards or 30 feet away from the hole on an average length course as they are hitting in with short irons or almost every hole. So your average golfer is putting (most likely for birdie) on every hole from about 10 yards or less.

Using B then average golfer on an average course is still only hitting 5 GIR! 5!

Put this to the test on a long, tight Tour spec course and the average golfer's GIR will drop off rapidly simply due to the course being tricked up, pos hitting 3 or 4 GIR. Where as the Pro is still hitting 15 GIR per round leaving a distance of 20-15 yards or closer.

Either way, you'd still want the Pro playing to the green. This is simple maths, no contest A wins.

I have altered my opinion slightly.
It would wholly depend on the weakness of the 18hdp. Most pros are 'very good' at all aspects of golf.
They might be an 18 hdp because they can only carry 175y with a driver.

Put this into perspective.

Would you rather -

A) have Rory playing your ball and you do the short game
B) you do the playing of the ball and Luke Donald do the short game

Even off 3 I would take a), and my strengths are long game.

Why, what's in it for me, it's just as easy to leave you being wrong.

Well that way some people can see your reasoning and give it a bit of context as opposed to just stating people are wrong but not actually providing any basis for it - think they call it a mature pleasant debate from both sides.

A all day long for me.

A good few greens in reg, maybe par fives in 2. This will end in some birdies and a good few pars.

18 hc will likely leave very few decent birdie chances and probably lose a ball, stick one OB. Good putting wont save that.

It would also depend who the pro was.
Are we talking world top 10 or your local club pro ?
The variation there is huge also they can be a big difference between 18 handicappers

Regardless, I'd take a 5 handicapper hitting tee shots and approaches over an 18 handicapper
