Quite frankly, I can't be bothered with exercise any more.

I had a gut full off it when I was spending 5 nights a week in the gym (Personal Trainer).

RE Golf exercise.

Core strength and flexability is pretty much all you'd need to focus on.

Physical strength and stamina would be on the back burner and a side thought (For general fitness) for me.

I agree that flexibility and core should be the focus if you're training for golf.

In general fitness training for golf is overrated. Unless of course your general fitness and/or body weight is an issue.

I don't think fitness training is required for golfing excellence. Just look at the brilliant fatties that play. Craig Stadler etc.

Insanity workout - I am currently doing this once a week with a few mates at our rackets club to get ready for the new squash season and it is an absolute killer! I dread the sessions but it works. Painful but effective.

I amble 5 yards to the car 3 times a week to go to golf.

something similar to this :)

however, in their wisdom the club are looking to introduce a golf fitness program and are running a couple of free courses in Sept/Oct as a trial.....somehow I got signed up on one!

core strength, flexibility and balance being the objectives

General keep fit, a few runs/cycles and body core work will help flexibility and keeping your heart rate down when its needed. I did far to much weight work last year and it killed my game! I just do some running and outside work now and feels it helps with basic shoulder turn and heart rates etc. Its a bit like loosing to much weight (Ask Monty and John Daly) in one go but the other way round if that makes sense?? I have trained and taught fitness training for years and to be honest if you do to much or to quickly especially with weights you'll end up with injuries and a different shape body that cant maintain the original swing....You kind of have to start again. Keep it simple and it will help though. Dont copy the pros.... doing a Tiger Woods training program will not make you nail like Tiger .... Like most things if you are consistent and keep it part of your lifestyle on a regular basis is better than doing loads at the beginning and then nothing.. says me nailing a pasty for my lunch!!! .:ooo:good luck.

Girls or golf balls? Having an athletic physique might help you.

Found this a couple of weeks ago for someone who's been relying on golf as their main source of fitness for a while breaking myself in easy seemed the best idea!

It is very very good!! i did it a while back, my mrs is currently doing it now, she gets up at 5:30Am and goes out 3 times a week while i am still sleeping!

I didnt quite get to the end, got busy with work etc, but stick with it, it amazing how far you can run after a while!! contemplated entering a local 5k race, then realised i couldnt be bothered!! now just ride my bike occasionally and golf.. i am unfit though currently to my standards, dont think i could run 3k at the minute!!

Tonight'll be my 2nd run of week 2 so far it's not been too much of a stretch though I was pulling in some air by the end of the 7th run on Tuesday!

I don't think fitness training is required for golfing excellence.

Not required but can help some players. Can also hinder others. Carl Peterson felt that his tempo suffered after he list some lard.

If time is short then resistance bands and stretching may be useful. Cardiovascular fitness might also help if your game deteriorates towards the end of a round.

I do 7 sit ups a week. I do half in the morning getting out of bed and the other half at night getting back into it.

In reality tho as an infantryman in army im pretty fit esp for my larger frame. However been in the big bunker 6 months now doing op massive so will se how its affected my game next month when home.

I've started doing circuit to try and get some form of exercise into my life. Not great for the golf though lol. First week I did them and tried playing golf my arms felt like spaghetti.
A few of the girls at work are trying to talk me into doing Yoga with them but it is on the same day as circuits. When my current course of is up I probably will join them. At the very least it will give me something nicer to look at than the few sweaty guys that do the circuits.

Do you guys do anything specific for golf? Do you do anything at all or is golf your exercise?

I get up at 5:30am for work and get home around 6:30pm..... I have a 7 month old son and dont feel like I have time to exercise. But starting next week I'm going to try and fit in 3 mid week sessions of 30 minutes each..... basically I'm going to do half of each p90x resistance sessions.

Thoughts and comments welcome.

It will help your game massively, as well as feeling better in general. I took about 10 months off of playing Golf and literally just dedicated myself to the gym, obviously it sounds like you can't do this but 3 sessions a week is a good start. The power and distance increase in my game is incredible, it'll definitely help. I'm 18 and I can hit my 3 wood about 300 yards! Go for it man! :)

It's not a question of the OP not being able to- why would anyone want to take 10 months off golf to train?

Which of your 3 woods do you hit 300 yards?

I wasn't insinuating that he had to take 10 months off, I was just sharing my experience haha. It's simple though, you build muscle and your power and distance will increase for golf. Look at the guys on tour who work out!
And I hit my Cleveland Ultralite 3 wood 300 yards, it barely weighs anything so the amount of swing speed I can produce with it is crazy. :)

That's good going!

Golf's a funny old game. A real mix of body shapes playing the sport professionally.

I would always say that (above average) physical fitness is down the list of desirable attributes for golf though, behind:

Good hand-eye coordination
A sound swing
Good touch/feel
Good rythm
Mental strength (common sense?)
...probably others.

I'm not trying to put people off of training, I train myself. I just think it's a bit overrated in golf, especially when I hear of people following what is essentially a body-building programme.

Thanks buddy! Yeah definitely, the skinniest man in the world could hit a golf ball far if he could turn his body correctly etc. It's definitely over rated in Golf when people say it HAS to be a part of it because it doesn't for sure, I just started weight training to make myself look better then when I eventually got my Golf membership renewed I've seen a huge difference in distance with clubs like my 3 wood, pitching wedge etc. But anyway, I think more blokes need to take care of their bodies in general with training etc, being 18 it amazes me how many people my age really don't actually look masculine anymore!
