Just returned from my club AGM .The Chairman had everything done an dusted in under an hour , this was not because he is so clever more the fact that the gang of six (the committee) had organised everything to suit themselves and when questions or suggestions came from the floor they were either dismissed or " we will discuss that point at the next committee meeting " was their favourite phrase . The secretary just sat expressionless , but of course he is a friend of a friend .Who's business went bust and now he is marking time to collect his pension as our Hon Sec .This is the last AGM i will go to .Gave the mental strength DVD another go today as our course is still shut , i lasted 30 mins before dropping off , another useless golf xmas box .Can't wait for toil tomorrow LOL

I'm sorry but if our committee did that there would be plenty on the floor who wouldn't stand for it and I imagine a vote of no confidence would follow

If you and your fellow members feel it was a stitch up, and to be fair sometimes gavel goes down before you get chance to say owt, check your club rules and if there is provision for it call an EGM. But you'll need all your ducks lined up or you'll get shot down within minutes of standing up at the EGM if you haven't done your homework and primed everyone to speak.

It happens at clubs up and down the country I'm afraid. Committee and board members stitch things up and vote them through between themselves. I've experienced similar to the OP.

Well done chairman I'd be tempted to say, how long did you want the meeting to last? An AGM is difficult for any committee and if they were not prepared for (often) the crap that is thrown at them from the floor then frankly they wouldn't last long. Presumably you have elections for committee members at the meeting so to say the committee have everything stitched up is hardly fair. If they were that controversial they wouldn't get voted on - period. End of the day it's up to the committee to run the club and they will (I'm sure) listen to all the "questions and suggestions" but the AGM isn't the place to argue the toss over what are mostly trivial issues so saying they will be discussed at another time is actually the right thing to do most of the time.

Speaking from the committee point of view, you can't expect an answer to, say, a difficult question that is asked without prior notice, to be given by the agm. If you have a searching question, my advice would be to write in about two weeks in advance of the agm and say the you will require a full answer at that meeting. Too many people use the agm "any other business" to trick the chairman into making fool of himself and you can't blame him for not allowing that to happen

An AGM is a formal occasion and should be run on strict lines. Most clubs/sections insist that any matters not covered on the 'notice of AGM' must be made in writing xx days prior to the AGM.
I have attended AGM's, golf and others, where the AOB is a free for all going on as long as the main business.
At our senior's AGM 'AOB' is on the agenda but only matters with prior notice are dealt with. When that's done the meeting closes.
If it's not done this way everything from the barmaid's too long skirts to the state of the greens comes up (or down). It can be fun sometimes but hell, I want to get to the bar.

First question i would ask is 'why are we having an AGM on a Sunday night'???
You obviously have a little grudge against your club to be making these comments and to be bringing the secretary's previous business dealings into the equation.
Maybe some mental strength is whats needed here.

Regards

The Fudge :-)
