I won't change a ball unless damaged / lost no matter how good or bad the round is
Mind you, last Sunday I lost 4 in the invitation at my club which is a new (poor) record, blaming my guest though as we were out drinking until 3am and suffice to say we did not play that well!!

I would use 18 if they were free as they are for the pros. Why not?

As it is I generally try and keep the same ball for as many rounds as possible... as long as it looks roughly spherical :D

I just use one per round, can't think why I'd change it.

Don't tend to lose too many nowadays either. Usually when I do lose one it's only played a couple of holes since I retired the previous one after several rounds. Sods law.

Tend to use two per round. As the new wedges make a right mess of them. This presumes no lost balls.

I found the last paragraph of the link interesting!

One ball a round for me.

But I'm often losing a ball a round at the moment. My excuse is that the rough wasn't being cut when we had all that rain. But I'm hoping it will be a little better on Saturday.

Another plonker here not reading the first post before voting. I only replace a ball when its lost, I take a dozen balls out with me in my bag and hope to have ten left when I finish.

I change to a naff old thing if the chance of losing the ball is high, say approaches with water hazards or rough thick enough to hide a deer in (and the buggers do make you jump when they make a break for it).

I've heard other people say this and always thought it was a bit negative. It kind of makes you think about the water and not the target. I'm pretty sure if you didn't think so negatively about the water you wouldn't go in it as much.

At the end of the day, it's just a golf ball. Popping an old one in the water gives you the same penalty as popping a new one in and surely your score is the important thing?

I've read the article a couple of times now and the only point I can see that it is trying to make is is that amateurs use less balls than pro's while complete ignoring the fact that we have to pay for them. If someone gave me a dozen Prov1s before every round I dare say I'd use them all, but they don't, so I don't.

I dare say if they did a similar survey with gloves they'd find amateurs use the same glove for months on end whereas Pro's probably change a few times a round.

keep using the same one unless the course has a really nice signature hole that demands a fresh one out the box :-)
or on a realistic par 3 where the resulting hole in one ball would get mounted etc

I normally don't change ball during the round unless I find water etc, however yesterday after an appalling start to my medal round and a guarented 0.1 back I did snap at someone who was determined to get my ball fom 5 yards OOB 'if you touch that ball it had better be to throw it in the pond cos I don't want the f***'ing thing back!!'. It made him laugh anyway!!

Normally I am quite serene playing golf but lost it after having my worst start for ages in our first quallifier for ages - typical!!

I hardly ever go in the water but why lose a £1/1.50 ball when you can lose a ball bought from a charity shop for 10p. OK it's ony 90p but as someone earlier said, it all adds up and they spend as much on balls as they do on fees over a month.
