GM - Where are the ladies

Reading this months magazine I was struck by the total lack of exposure/coverage of lady golfers.

I guess the 'lockdown ' has caused me a bit of boredom but out of the 114 pages I could only see ábout 5 or 6 photos where the focus was a lady golfer !!

No articles were on the ladies.

Only about 3 female staff are ĺisted in the info. - none on the editorial team.

We often bemoan the lack of lady members and this stuff can't help.

Come on GM we need more exposure of our ladies...

It's not that type of magazine!

I agree though it would be great if there's even more content particularly on the tours or those with social media profiles so you can have other things to follow (e.g. you tube content). Guess it's still chicken and egg though of mainly male readership focusing on their experience.

I thought that when Rick shiels had Mia baker on and she was proper moaning about American golf not having a good enough shoe section for ladies compared to men's and not s lot of choice all round

Valid points yes but as a buisness you surely need to make money .. and if that store doesn't get many lady customers will they fill a wall?

Plus also.. if people buy more and more online why on earth would they stock stuff that people will just go elsewhere

There are specialist magazines for the female golfers. The Lady Golfer and Women and Golf perhaps the best known ones and I would guess there would be the same bias and very little coverage (if any) of the mens game. I think MikeH has covered this before

Surely you play to your audience though? The fact is a lot of male golfers are interested in their own golf and the male pros but not in female pros at all.

Hence a lot of ladies are not interested in buying the Golf Monthly mag. Maybe a ladies section in the mag to entice customers ??.

We are delighted to share the news that Norwood Park Golf is the first club in Nottinghamshire to be credited with the Women in Golf Charter by the R&A and England Golf.

"The progressive award-winning club has pledged to drive participation among Women and Girls as well as encouraging more females to pursue a career within the golf industry".

Norwood Park Golf already has an extensive history of supporting both county & national initiatives including:

• Supporting England Golf ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ programme which targets beginner girls aged 7 - 14 years to learn golf in a fun and friendly way. Norwood was a pilot centre for the national project in 2016 and has since developed weekly coaching groups, outreach work in schools and fun events at the Club

• Many of Norwood's junior girls are now county players & junior member Maddie Smith was recently selected for the England Golf regional training squad

• PGA Professional Richard Strange is the lead county girls coach along with Norwood being the training base for the county girls squad

• The membership pathway to support the retention of women & girls within the club is also highlighted as a key positive area.

• The ‘Pink Ladies’ weekly coaching groups and Par 3 Club provide the ideal stepping stone into full membership

• Over the past 10 years, female membership has increased by 106 % whilst girls membership has seen a staggering 550% increase

The club has put in place plans to measure the success of each pledge as well as having set timescales linked to each commitment.

Norwood Park Golf has received the backing and full support from England Golf – the governing body for the amateur game in the country.

England Golf will provide assistance via its network of Club Support Officers to enable the club to develop and expand their policy in the months and years to come.

“It has been fantastic to work with Norwood on their Women in Golf Charter. Committing to women and girls’ golf is nothing new for Norwood; they have worked very hard in the past on recruiting and retaining women by throwing themselves into national campaigns as well as creating their own initiatives. Becoming a Charter signatory formalises their commitment for now and in the future and I look forward to following their progress.”

The trouble is, who writes it? I would suggest the editorial staff are far more versed in the mens game and so perhaps lack the depth to do the ladies section justice. Also if its something 95% of the readership will flick past (perhaps pausing to look at the pictures) can they justify the extra pages and extra print cost?

There would be no need for extra pages or print costs just drop some of the instructions and club reviews that bored so many from re subscribing.

I agree and I always like the argument used by market researchers. They survey readers and find a majority are men so produce a male dominated publication. A subsequent survey proves a further rise in the proportion of males readers and so the self delusion continues.

Swing characteristics of female Pros are a lot closer to those of 'normal' male amateur golfers than male Pros ones are! So, much can be learnt from both imo!

Personally, I'm the opposite (well, I am still interested in my own game) but I'd much rather watch the LPGA than the PGA. I watch the PGA tour as well, but I find the women's game set the courses up a lot better, and as they generally don't hit the ball as far as the men, it's a lot less "bomb and gouge", one dimensional golf, and a lot more tactically plotting a way round the course.

i think this has come up before and it comes down to the fact that there are a much lower percentage of women golfers comp to men, so the audience is small and there are already a couple of Mags for Women... it was a bit of a catch 22, not bought a golf mag in a while myself, but things could have changed??

Agree we could learn a lot by watching the female pros swings, what I’ve noticed from the majority of female golfers at our club is that they all over swing even some of the older ladies.

From a relevance to my own game point of view I'd completely agree. The distances that the current PGA tour guys hit it bear no comparison with my game whatsoever.
