Re: GM Irish Craic Classic 2011

Chris you are right, never thought of it till i got home and the wife asked me what i had for dinner. In my defence as soon as i remembered that I hadn't paid I rang them, told them what happened and paid for my dinner, still can't believe I left without paying though, I think I was too flustered at the thought of going to Birmingham. Sorry for letting the side down by doing such a thing...

Re: GM Irish Craic Classic 2011

What a weekend!
Firstly thanks again to the GM guys for all of their assistance which helped make this weekend a great one. Thanks also goes to the guys who offered advice and also Bob who helped me obtain a V-EASY. Special mention also to those who put up with my Seve-esque driving all weekend.
There are plenty of stories, some may even be non alcohol related!
I have a few more pics and clips to go through but will get some more up today at some point, if anyone hasn't sent me theirs, please pm me for my email address.

For a dozen of us, we arrived Friday evening, some of us having played other courses that afternoon. The Ballyliffin hotel is a clean, decent hotel and there was always someone on hand to help (read:serve a pint). Breakfast time both mornings were a sight to behold, many guys entering the restaurant section looked (and smelt) like they had fallen into a vat of beer yet, had their fryup and left ready for the day ahead.

Saturday.
The facilities and views at Ballyliffin certainly exceeded expectations. The short game practice green was as fast and smooth as the 18 out on the course. Even from the first tee it was clear how expansive and rugged the place was. Towering dunes and amazing views over the coast.
We played the Glashedy Links course as a warm up on Saturday and I can only describe the course and fantastic. The sun was shining, the greens were true, fairways meticulously manicured and the rough was plentiful (trust me, I found enough of it). A very enjoyable day with partners Jezz, Mike Weston and Mark Sterrit.
Playing from the Gold tees we were faced with around 6700 yards of pure links indulgence. Scores ranged from woeful to very respectable, no need to go into much more detail there for fear of repercussions! The black tees were just a little too much of an ask for us slightly fragile souls and at 7200 yards would be a severe test for any golfer. This course visually is stunning, I just could not believe how elevated some of the teeboxes are, especially the 7th, par 3 170 yards, it felt like I was stood looking down from the roof of an office block. Another stand out hole was the 13th, par 5 uphill, plenty of bunkers and a green, surrounded by bunkers sloped heavily back to front with a nice deep bunker ready to catch errant approaches and as the fourball in front of us found out, putts from the back of the green.

The Motley Crew ready for the Saturday warm up.

Sunday
Having watched the forecast for nigh on 2 weeks before, the whole week bar Sunday seemed to be changeable, one thing remained constant, we were due to get drenched today. It didn't happen.
A slightly breezier lunchtime tee off saw 20 competitors (bar one soggy late arrival, wont mention who, John)
arrived fit and ready for the different challenge of the Old Course. Photos were taken and goodybags handed out and it was time to head to the first tee.
The fairways were certainly tighter and more rippled than the Glashedy. Off the white tees we had 6400 yards or so to navigate. Again the greens were fantastically true if a little more subtle in places, one green that was not subtle was the 17th. It looked like they had buried a few little elephants under it. I thought the greens were wider but a lot more shallow compared to the Glashedy which made iron carry judgement a little more important around this course. If you hit the wrong part of the green, you might hold it but a 50 foot putt could be coming your way, this was not uncommon in our fourball!

As the last fourball tapped in on the 18th, the clouds began getting heavier and it wasn't long before we were sat in the clubhouse watching a couple of eager young lads practicing in the wind and light rain, I have to say, if I was a local, you wouldn't be able to pull me away from the place either.

After a quick drink it was prize time....

We had a count back and winning with 35 points, Bill Martin, a gent and all round nice guy, received the crystal trophy, Ping putter (courtesy of GM)and entry to the Centenary as the low section winner.

Second place went to Rick De Graaf, he received a set of four Augusta ball markers and a Ping truckers cap, the big fella also had the only 2 of the day and scooped the 60 euro bounty.

Third place, I had the pleasure of playing with Emmet (Janmolby), a decent score of 33 points ensured that he gained the high section entry to the Centenary Final as well as a V-Easy and Callaway Cap.

Good luck to both guys, if they can keep their games at this level in October, they should do very well. I would also like to thank the guys for the gift, there was no need but was very much appreciated. I think it is fair to say that a few new friendships have been forged and ther ewill certainly have to be another event next year, see if we can top it.

Finally, I could not finish before mentioning the lifeline located at the back of the 11th hole (middle of the vast landscape). This was of course, the burger van. Many guys would not have made it round had it not been the cheese and bacon burgers, bacon butties and hot dogs.

Everyone geared up ready for the Old Course

Re: GM Irish Craic Classic 2011

Had a quick minute to upload one of the lighter moments form Saturday and two very hung over punters.

http://youtu.be/7IkG6QCY9AQ

How you think I felt Brendy?? I had to play with those two "eejits"

Seriously though I enjoyed their company and they are 2 great lads even though John "4 Putt" Bond was drinking little bottles of girly beer on saturday night ;)

Great couple of days and do we have to wait a whole year to do it again?

Re: GM Irish Craic Classic 2011

Steve, Bondy swears that the Coors light removes the chance of hangovers! he was fresh the next day, my brother Simon who knows what cider does to me(having seen me do it a lot in my younger years) if I drink too much of it the night before just doesnt learn! haha.

I wouldnt mind doing it all over again, just not have me as the speech maker at the end, I prefer to listen! haha.

Alan, the MDC is real enough matey! :D

Re: GM Irish Craic Classic 2011

Naybrains, you should see it for yourself from both on top and looking up at that dune, it is simply massive, I'd reckon maybe 8-10 storeys easily, hard to quantify as it pretty much takes up the skyline looking up from the green. The courses look so easily laid out when up there, as soon as you are back to sea level you can't see another hole most of the time. Awesome in the true meaning of the word, I caught myself just staring at the sheer natural ruggedness of it all on both days. It really is a must play and can't believe it took me until I was 34 years of age to play there considering it is less than two hours from home.

You forget the school years big man? :D All round me (1hr drive) there is about 7 - 8 fantastic links course and most are not stupid money either.

Would be good to do it again soon enough although can we get somewhere with good guinness this time.....
