Now that we are fully into the "off season" of British golf, how are you feeling?

When I played my last "proper" game about 6 weeks ago I was getting a bit fed up with the whole thing.

I'd played loads this year including Wednesday medal, Thursday night team matches, friday night team matches, saturday medal and the usual club knock-out matchplay games (that's every week!)

Is it possible to be over golfed?

However, I went out on to the course yesterday and played 8 holes, hit it great and made 8 pars. Now I feel the golf bug beginning to bite already, and its still only December!!! The new season seems ages away now....

I never really stop. I do think I over golf in that in the summer I'm either playing or practicing most evenings. I don't think you can really over golf in terms of playing on the course as there is always something fresh and different (which is why we all love the game anyway) to try or overcome.

I guess if you are only playing competitive rounds it could become a bit wearing especially mentally but most clubs I know only have a monthly medal and stableford and a midweek medal and stableford. As I work, I can normally only play the weekend events and maybe four months worth of midweek events if I can get the flexi or leave sorted. There are other competitions on other weekends (qualifiers, gold board events etc) but I never feel overly golfed out competitively. I guess I just get stale from too much practice which is something I may address next season anyway (or at least get something more structured in place)

Fraser, I remember we discussed the phrase GOLF MONTHLY and I said I hadn't even played that often. I have had a dreadful season and really am glad its over. I may play in the winter but first of all I need to get the old mojo back as it has been dead for almost a year. I think the last game I really enjoyed and played well was the forum day in march at Blairgowrie.

It happened to me but different folks different strokes.

I average 1 a week but got in about 65 rounds this yr but had practice sessions off course. I think it burned me out some years ago playing as you indicated and more. Im chilled out now and happy with my frequency of play, would like more but happy with what I have, I think it is possible to play too much, but each to their own.

Back problems curtailed season, played well in short spells but never got going.
Last card returned in disgust on August 2nd. :(

However after a long layoff I am starting to get enthused again for golf :), was thinking earlier it's about 100 days before our medals start again. Also happy we've passed the solstice and the days are lengthening again. Just acquired a new driver and keen to give it a bash.

Might just get out over Christmas, you never know.

Going to get fitter for this upcoming season, also try to play to strengths and course manage a bit better this year, praying it'll be injury free.

Target this year is to improve handicap and finish higher than 4th in Club Champs which is the best I've managed twice at my current club.

The past season was certainly a washout for the latter part of the season. We had so much rain in Aug, Sept & Oct that the course was virtually unplayable. That did cause a rather poor run of scoring in my last four comps.

The optimist in me is saying we can't get it that bad again. Recent weather has/is helping to dry out the course so that will help.

Mid season, a family bereavement caused a bit of a hiccup, but the golf was a good escape from all that turmoil.

Played reasonable golf in the Foursomes and the Mixed Foursomes, getting well on in both comps. Played as many Medals and Comps as possible over the year.

I am looking forward to 2009, I always look forward to the start of the season in late March, but this year I've got a target of getting some golf under the belt before the Goswick weekend in late Feb. So with that in mind, Im definately fired up for 2009. Just need my current neck injury to abate and it will all be okay.

Definately looking forward to 2009.

Although this was my best season ever, I am glad the medal comps are over.
I got a bit carried away towards the end of the year chasing a single figure handicap and made a complete a**e of it.

I'm looking forward to getting back to what golf is all about, enjoying your mate's company, having a laugh and just playing for the side bets throughout the winter.

Got back playing after about 12 years a year ago. Planning on having a good year in 2009. Haven't played competetive golf for a long long time. I used to really enjoy the competetive side and looking forward to getting back into it.

Handicap should be interesting....my best round so far was last week (81) worst was 98. Usually in the 80's.

Target for 09

Reasonable handicap
get amongst my club comps
Meet some more of you guys
and enjoy it!

Played alot this year, I think I even played 5 full rounds in 7 days at the begining of summ...... june.

Changing clubs asap and I hope to get amoungst the comps. Doubt I will make any of the weekend ones but hoping they have some midweek ones.

I think you can over golf and burn out. I think I did a few times. Good week off had me raring to go again.
