Gimmie Gimmie or not

I don't mind either way.

If it's unmissable what's the problem in holing it. If you think you might miss then you shouldn't be upset if it isn't given.

Simples :)

Would it be better to do away with gimmies in comps?

While playing in our singles comp my opponant give me a putt of around 3 ft to half the hole.First of all i was surprised he give me the putt ( he was 3 up with 5 to play)and second I would have rather putted out and felt that I "earned" a half. Also it could be a disadvantage to the low h/c players if a high h/c give him a longish put early in the round he might feel he would have to give him a longish put,Many a higer h/c could miss a short putt.Could be called gamesmanship on the part of the high h/c.You maybe give a putt sometime in your round then if your opponants putting around that same lengh of a putt for the match you hear "ill see that one in" Seems a bit curlish to give on and not the other. So I think I would rather there were no gimmies.Be interested to hear any comments.

He's probably playing Jedi mind tricks on you.......
If he's 3 up with 5 to go after he does that your going to be wondering why the hell he gave you that every time you stand over your ball ready to swing a club....

Dont give in Luke Feel the power of the force.... :D :D

Being 3 up with 5 to play, and the best you could muster would have been a half on that hole, all he was trying to do was speed things along a bit (not saying that you were slow, more that he didn't have anything to lose).
Had you needed that 3 footer for a win, I doubt he would have given it to you.
No real harm done, and to be honest.....I would have done the same.

You've only got to look at the master of matchplay Seve to see that the concession (or not) can be used as a weapon in your armoury against an opponent in matchplay.
All perfectly legal and fair in my opinion, after all your opponent has the ability to do it to you if he wants!

On the flip side of this is the fact that it's worth practicing your holing out from gimme range to be a good matchplay player.

I never ever assume i'll be given a putt and always mentally prepare to hole out every time.

Remember Seve and Tom Lehman at the Ryder Cup in '95 at Oakhill. Seve got right under his skin by not giving a short putt. Seve had it marked and was then able to use the marker to line up his own putt. He lost the tie but the match went to Europe by 1 point.

I'd personally do away with gimmies however do see and appreciate what they offer to matchplay.

I'm just too generous and badly timed gimmes have bit me on the ass too many times yet I still give them.

Worst one was I told opponents to pick up and partner just glared at me - "you've just given them the hole" - I forgot they had a shot - debatable as to whether he would have missed or not? However, that was just me being stupid and not thinking.
