After ankle surgery I can no longer play rugby so am going back into golf as my only sport.

I have had the pleasure of looking at lots of shiny things to get me back into it over the last few weeks.

I played off 4 around a year ago before fully stopping to concentrate on rugby. I am now getting back into golf after a 12 month break and after surgery and it is going to take a good year or so to get myself able to swing the way I was!

So my question is would you buy equipment for the quality of golfer you are now or buy for the golf you would be playing in a years time. For example game improvement Irons vs cb/blade set?

This question is purely hypothetical as I went and bought a set of Mizuno MP15/MP4 Combo!

So you're asking have you made a mistake lol

Depends how good a ball striker you are I woulda thought but the fact you've had to ask means that you are possibly going to have that nagging thought what if the times you play poorly.

Did you get fit? If not that would have probably been best bet.

I'm always in favour of GI irons for us mere mortals. Even a lot of tour players will play ap2 for example for that forgiveness.

But then we do it for fun so if what you've bought makes you happy then really that's all that matters

In a roundabout way yes I am haha! I did get fitted and know my own specs. However going up your local golf shop after not hitting a ball for 8 months probably wasn't my smartest move...

I'll battle on!

I'm sure they will be the right fit since you were off 4 the swing can't be that far off.

PS get support on that ankle... although it's not the MOST athletic sport there is still a fair amount of strain on and knees, hips and ankles with the rotation. not to mention all the times walking and swinging on uneven ground and up and down hills

Completely forgot about strapping the ankle! You are right.

If you were off 4 only a year ago then you should have a well grooved swing that won't drastically change unless the broken bone affects how you swing. I reckon you should be fine. Did you sell all your gear?

Annoyingly yes, its scary how much money you need for beer when playing rugby every weekend!

The set of irons I have picked up are great, I am just concerned about wether it is best to start off with something easier to hit or start off with something that I want to be able to hit like I used to.

Hi Bomber,

I wouldn't say I took time off the game as such but I only played 1/2 rounds a year for about 4/5 years until last year.

Game is still coming back now after a year and a bit but it's slowly coming. I made the mistake of buying new more 'blade' style forged irons and haven't massively got on with them. Lost distance but they're particularly weak lofts which makes sense. Recently purchased some AP1's which I should have soon so hoping that helps out a little.

It's taken ages for my short game to get consistency, was never an amazing short game player but always consistent and until about 2 months ago it was horrendous, bladed everything.

don't take it too seriously at the start like I did because it took me a while to realise that I wasn't an 8 handicapper anymore. You might not have lost it as much as I did as bit less time.

Hope it goes well though!

Thanks for the advice - I got a really good deal so can always swap them in for something a little easier! Good luck and let me know how the AP1's go!

Richard Boxhall would not doubt agree

Off four you can clearly play. Make sure the ankle doesn't impact the swing and take it from there. The clubs you have to get that low obviously worked so if its a case of lusting after new shinies because you can, then the simple answer seems to be try as many as you can, and then decide if you want another fit or if you'd be happy with off the peg. Do you think you can get back to 4 (or close) or will you be happy off say 8-9. Personally I'd suggest some degree of cavity and many quality sets (ping blades, Titleist etc) all have this to help when strike is slightly off

I have been down the range tonight. Ankle is sore. But not as sore as all the muscles I'm using that were pretty much obselete in rugby! I do think I can get back down there. But it will be difficult as it looks like I may have to train myself to swing completely differently, it is going to be a strain to hit the ball as aggressively as I used to. Maybe a slightly more level head approach will actually improve my game rather than trying to muscle my way around a course. Only time will tell!
