can anyone enlighten me please on what, hitting a green in regulation means and also the putting yips???
from reading some other posts i gather the yips is some kind of duffed putt but what exactly. thanks

Hi cosworth im not renound for being the forums golf guru but here goes
Greens in regulation:par3,on green in 1
par4,on green in 2
par5,on green in 3
the yips is a putting problem, just as the putter hits the ball your grip tightens causing an involentary jerk sending the ball god knows where
hope this helps mate

That's right, GIR is defined as being (par - 2) strokes.
It's a crucial stat for golfers expecially those off anbout 15 or less. For higher handicappers it's possibly not so relevant. Indeed, you could argue that GIR for an 18 handicapper is (Par-1) as such a golfer gets a stroke at each hole.

The yips: we don't want to discuss that. If we do, someone's bound to start talking about shanking (
and we don't want that, do we ?)

The yips can be described as trying to putt with a live cobra instead of a putter. Bear in mind that if you hit 18 greens in regulation whilst you have the yips you're unlikely to break 90. That's why we don't like to talk about them.

You've lost me, mate. Belgie answered the question. If it's a par 3 and you hit the green with your tee shot it's GIR.
ETC.

The yips is a mental problem. With some people it can take the form of not being able to take the putter back from the ball. They then tend to jerk it back and also make a jerky forward stroke.

When I was playing good and scoring in the mid 70s, we used to review the round and consider how many fairways hit and GIR. Interestingly, I mostly scored good on the fairways hit but poor on the GIR. My club partner was the reverse. On a course with whopper greens, I'd rather miss every green rather than be 35ft or something daft.
It's not how, but how many.....
