Hi everyone, my first post on the forum and its probably going to be a long one. I have intermittently played golf since 2012 when I was 6 years old and it was my grandad who got me into it. Over the past 8 months or so I have been getting back into the game and I have had a couple of lessons which have greatly improved my swing and just my game in general. I saw gains of 20 or so mph in most clubs and as much as 40 yards in some shots as well. I don't know my handicap but if I was to guess its probably between 16-20.

The main thing I'm asking about though is to do with clubs. I have a very random collection of clubs which have almost all been hand me downs from my grandad and they are quite old and they aren't the most forgiving, nor do they go the furthest. Today I had a fitting as I was curious as to what clubs would be suited to me. After that was over, the results were that I needed 1/2 inch longer irons and standard woods and driver as well as all clubs being regular flex.

Back to the main point of the thread, I will probably have up to £1000 to spend on a full set of newer clubs, I'd honestly prefer to stick to used if I could to try and keep costs down. I'm looking for clubs that offer forgiveness and distance. I have heard good things about the Taylormade SIM 2 Max driver and I was thinking about going 3 wood and then a 22 degree hybrid, but I don't know what to look for on the last two. Then a set of irons from 5-PW, and then 2 or 3 wedges; another area where I am not sure on what to look for. I'm quite happy with my current putter.

Could I please get some suggestions on what to look for? I don't have a brand preference either.

Many thanks

Evan

Depends what you play off but I’d get your clubs from somewhere you can try before you buy. Otherwise you could be blowing a grand on clubs that feel like chair legs.

Personally, I’d think you’d be better getting fitted for new Mizuno JPX hotmetals for £900 and get what you can re drive with your change. Then build your woods over time.

As an example on both points. A friend and I got fitted for JPX irons 8years ago and still use them. We bot got fitted for different regular shafts and can’t hit each other’s clubs.

Ping do really forgiving everything and there a massive brand who sell lots so should be plenty of choice on the second hand market.
Irons are a tricky one if you want to put time into golf and get good I would go for a less forgiving irons it will be better in the long run. Forgiving irons are horrible for feel and looks as you get better. Mizuno do some great less forgiving irons for quite cheap.
Wedges volkey are really popular and should be plenty for sale pre owned.

Bit tight with your budget but check out Hayward golf. Brand new clubs , irons look pure. My friend has a set and they’re really good.

Other than this, what you say is spot on. Ping G or I range, Taylormade sim or Callaway rogue will be fine. Check out golfbidder and golfclubs4cash.

Not sure where you are based but if anywhere near Chippenham (SW not Cambridgeshire one) then check out cashforeclubs. They do a build a bag deal where you tell them your budget and they will put together a full set and bag for you. £1000 there will get you a great set, maybe even some brand new clubs as they often get them in. They have a simulator so you can try the clubs as well. If you can’t get there in person, give them a call, really helpful guys.

Hi there, yes I was thinking that it would be the case of going somewhere to try out different sets in person. I'm not keen on spending all of the money on irons as much as they are arguably the most important clubs. I was thinking of spending about 60% of the budget on irons and then finding used woods, driver and wedges.

I have always looked at Ping and thought that they are nice clubs in general particularly for newer players getting into the game. I have also heard good things about Volkey wedges so I will have a further look into those.

Golf clubs for cash would be a good bet to have a look online and build a set if priority is to keep to a £1000 budget, huge selection and can find your spec of length and flex’s.

But you should go to a range and try out some brands, see what you feel comfy with, the likes of ping that’s been mentioned iron wise the shape and feel of their irons hasn’t changed drastically even if you were to purchase an older model.

Get yourself a good putter shape that you feel comfortable with, at the level you’re playing at just now I wouldn’t get too bogged down with what different type of woods, irons, wedges you go for, make sure they’re forgiving and a decent brand and you’ll be fine, but the short stick is what matters, feel is everything and a big difference between bladed heads, mallet heads, short, long, insert face etc

I have been looking on Golfbidder but the problem is is that there are so many different clubs and I don't know what would suit me. I guess this is where I need to go to a store that sells them and try them out for myself.

I'm based in SE London so it is a bit of a journey for me. I'll keep that in mind though, thank you.

Direct to consumer brands will be worth considering given your budget. Takomo and Caley the most widely known. Check out Sub70 aswell
The downside to Takomo is I can't try the clubs beforehand and the waiting time for clubs to appear that are custom I've heard has been upwards of 2 months. Caley was mentioned to me by the person who fitted me so I will have a look into those as well.

Ok, so you mention custom requirements and you've been fitted, so what were 1. your requirements and 2. the clubs used to fit you?

1/2 inch longer irons, 2 degree upright and regular flex. Woods and driver standard length and regular flex. The clubs used were a Cobra Airx 2.0 7 iron (which was quite nice to hit) and for the woods I hit a Ping G430 or G440, forget which. Great club to hit. I've forgotten which driver I hit and its not on the sheet either.

A lot of fitters and pros recommend a 5 wood rather than a three wood for amateurs these days. The extra loft and slightly shorter shaft makes them easier to hit and they still go a good distance.

Can you not see if the fitter/whoever can get that set - look to be around £500 new?

Then add a second hand driver, hybrid, couple of wedges and a putter?

Get going and see how you get on. Flogging or part exchanging what you don't like.

I love my 7 wood when I hit it well, the one I hit yesterday was a 7 wood with a 5 wood shaft.

I'm definitely considering them but I think that I probably should make the journey somewhere where I can test a range of clubs to get a better idea on what I like.

I have a five and a seven and have abandoned my 3, but everyone is different.
I like both but I don't know whether I should get rid of the 5 and 7 for a pair of hybrids. I know that I might lose a little bit of distance but I have always struck hybrids well and I have been struggling with my woods recently.
