Ford Escort RS1600i.

Mount Panorama, in Australia, is where they run the Toohey's 1000, formerly the Bathurst 1000.
That's 1000 kilometers.

He starts in 5th position.

That is a proper short wheel base rally car though. A standard 4 seat quattro is about 40k. But, if you want authenticity, the real beans, you just need a boat load of cash.

when I was a kid early/ mid 70’s. The cars we would see going through Sherwood Forest doing the RAC rally. Oh my word, gotta say my favourite was the Lancia Stratos.

Hey, things have moved on a bit.
The bidding on this piece of art is, with a day to go, up to an eye watering £180,000.
This RS500 once broke the Mount Panorama lap record, with a time of 2 minutes 13.84 seconds - and hitting 180mph on the Conrod Straight.

I bet a Hermes delivery driver could beat that, and still drop off (i.e. throw) the packages.

Few years ago my mate (who, in fairness is loaded) wanted his boyhood dream car, a 1991 Lancia Delta Integrale Evo 2, in rally spec. Cost him about £38k at the time.

He's spent the last two years restoring some of the parts that were less than perfect and in that time has done the grand total of 15 miles in it. What's the point?

I always wanted one of the Escorts and my boss finally agreed to me having one. It was written off the day after it was bought after some idiot pulled out of a junction without looking and I ended up sideways in a ditch on the opposite side of the road.

I also wanted a Lotus Cortina and had the chance to buy one but the insurance company would not insure my wife on it because of her age.

Pride of ownership, perhaps? I don't get why some folk feel the need to have expensive wristwatches that do the same job as my £5 Casio's... Or, indeed, hyper expensive hi-fi... If it floats your boat and you have the wherewithal enjoy it...

And and, of all the cars I've had the RS1600i wouldn't be at the top of my list of the one's I wished I kept...

Tricky Trev is looking for a new car. At the moment he has a focus ST on on a 14 plate with 25K on the clock. It looks gorgeous. Ave told him to box it and it may be worth a few quid in a few years. Others may disagree. That said what cars of today could be worth a Bob or two in a few years times bearing in mind we are going electric.

At the time the fords weren’t deemed to be the best, they were just considered warmed up. The Cosworth Sierras were real deal. My uncle was a Ford salesman and headed secondhand sales .. always had a cosworth or xr4x4i with the 2.8 in. It was all a bit before my time and I had a Peugeot 205 Gti 1.6 which I kept for 10 yrs it was immaculate until a lady drove into the side of it when it was parked. The fix was appalling 2 different metallic paints and the door need to bend to shut flush … so I binned it off

This goes under the hammer tomorrow, I think it will be a large sum to buy this 400+bhp RS200 with just 5,510 miles!

Its interesting to see how far car production has come when, in the mid 80s these were the pinnacle of motorsport, then the 90s saw the rise of the Subaru all powerful machines along with the Mitsubishi Evos.

And fast forward to now, my family saloon put out more power and torque than them.

The next 8 years will be interesting to see where the manufacturers that remain producing petrol engines (diesel is dead) will take it in terms of squeezing more power per cc.

The new Merc A/CLA/GLA 45S is a 1991cc block pumping out 420BHP. Thats insane when you consider the Vauxhall C20LET (one of the best 2.0L blocks of the 90s IMO) was only pushing our 220BHP max (and even then that was risky).
