(I realise I sound a bit like my missus with this one, but here goes...)

Popping my tournament cherry at the Open on Thurs, so unsure of the protocol. Do most people just wear normal shoes?

What with the weather and the huge galleries, I was thinking the course might get pretty messy so maybe a pair of wellies might be advisable??

Has anyone been yesterday / today? How's the course holding up? Any recommendations (other than 'Man-Up')

As above. Golf Shoes. I wore mine at the Irish Open and didn't regret it for one second. They are comfortable and provide grip and as a golfer you don't need to go out and buy another pair of shoes.

You may want to get a spare set of cleats for afterwards though. Mine took a hammering due to walking on concrete etc in them.

I'd also recommend taking a packpack and a fold up chair and wear the same clothes you'd wear on the course if you were playing in the same conditions.

You'll probably be surprised how well the course takes the trafiic though. It's amazing how much water a links course can handle. Royal Portrush had quiet a lot of rain and heavy foot traffic yet the ground took it very well with the only truley messy area being where they had cut paths through gorse bushes.

Yep agreed, forecast for Thursday is rain so golf shoes make perfect sense. It can get pretty slippy when you have 20,000 people stomping around on wet grass.

Judging by the weather you guys down there have been having i would say Wellies.

I've i nice pair of Hunters with metal studs you can borrow:)

Ive been to Lytham today and I reckon it's going to be pretty muddy by Thursday.
I'd advise golf shoes or walking boots, definately not wellies if your planning on doing some walking as you'll be slipping all over on the dunes.
