With the other thread on club champs format etc it got me thinking of ours and I was wondering what (if any) different preparation you guys do ahead of yours?

Is it just another game to be approached in the same way as any other or do you do anything different/special?

Could be that you just clean your clubs if you normally don't or maybe you arrive extra early, maybe you even buy a new clothes/shoes or some other piece of kit or just open a new sleeve of balls for the occasion...

I have a new pair of Adidas shoes due to my regulars starting to crack but I'd already decided that other then breaking them in I wont wear them on the course till club champs. Also the club normally give out new tops for the occasion so I'll wear that on day 2
My clubs are cleaned even after a range visit so nothing new there and no other equipment changes planned but as the course isn't round the corner I will stay overnight for the weekend and make an occasion of it (as many others do too) so the social aspect will be really good

I like to treat the event differently. I suppose I see it as my annual Open/Major tournament (even though I know there's not a cat in hells chance of a win) :)

... so what do you do?

Edit: oh and do you approach your play/shot selection any differently?

I've tried...
Build up as normal
Practice round the day before
Practice rounds each day for a week before
Getting smashed
Going to a demo night
Playing my own game
Playing someone else's game
Taking each shot as it comes
Having a game plan
Not giving a stuff
Bucket of balls and 30 minutes chipping/putting

And none of it worked......

Putting on glass/tiles/linoleum is the only practical difference normally!

And playing a round or 2 from the back tees!

The game you have today is pretty much the game you'll take into the club champs. The only thing I do differently is make sure I'm fit enough to enjoy the day. No out on the razz the night before, and get there without rushing. The happier, and more relaxed, I am the better I'll play.

Ours is this Saturday and Sunday although I shall only play in the handicap section. My preparation is a trip to France on Friday to play, (I didn't realise the dates were consecutive) a lesson last night and a minor swing change and just getting over a short bout of gout - all bodes well then!

9 holes on Wed night, Thu night and Frid night.
No beer for 3 nights before
If you hit a bad shot early on, dont panic, trust your swing.

But then you put extra pressure on yourself surely ?

Some could thrive on that or some could just freeze - i just treat it as any other day and hope I have a good day

I understand where you're coming from, and agree that different people will approach it from either direction. Personally, I embrace the extra buzz, and feel that by 'confronting' those feelings head on you actually learn to understand and deal with those pressures better.

Each to their own I guess.

It's just another comp for me this year. The last couple of years I've put pressure on myself to make the cut after round 1 and not really done myself justice. This year I'm just treating it as any other comp (if I can keep my game together for the next 6 weeks that is)

No its not about extra pressure, for me its not about performing to a PB its about enjoying it to PB

I suppose I can see where those in contention or with expectations to do well might then benefit from treating it as another game so I get where you're coming from

I dont change anything, from a preparation point its the same as any other comp. That said I see so many people on the practise ground the week before who need directions to find it, its the only time they ever use it. Dont see the point in heaping extra on. Its 2 medals back to back, add them up and see how you did.

Always amazed people when at one of the clubs when I was younger, that I led after day 1 of the CC. That night we went out as we did any other Saturday night till the small hours, thats how we always did it so didnt change the routine, people seemed to think I shouldve been home in bed fretting by 10pm lol

Played in it for the first time last year and ended up a combined 20+ over par for the 2 days. I've decided to take a much more conservative approach this time to keep any big scores off the card. Other than the prep is the same except I'm currently trying different clubs off the tee in practice rounds to see what the "safest" play is.

Played the 36 hole qualifier at my home club Sunday gone. A seven month old baby at home has meant very little golf and virtually no practice this year and had not hit a ball for 2 weeks going into Sunday. The result was 5 over gross am and 1 under gross pm, I have not seen the results but that will have easily qualified around 5th or 6th for the last 16 matchplay.
Previous years would normally involve a much better preparation but certainly no guarantee of playing well.
A more relaxed attitude to the game was probably the key factor over the day.

I wonder if the European Tour players prepare the same for the Malaysian Open and The Open Championship... or the US tour players prepare the same for The Millwauke Classic and The Masters?

I turn up, play golf, have a drink and hope I am out in a later group on day 2.....
