Club Champs Preperation

Just another round (or 2) of golf. All played on the same day, so I might make sure I have an extra bit of water/food in the bag, but apart from that, the approach is the same. It makes me laugh those that turn up an hour before and completely change their routine. Without sounding handicap snobbish, those off a higher handicap - will that extra hour really make much difference when you can be inconsistent anyway? Those off a lower handicap just have to trust what they have on the day.

I wonder if the European Tour players prepare the same for the Malaysian Open and The Open Championship... or the US tour players prepare the same for The Millwauke Classic and The Masters?

Couldn't quote them but I'm certain I've read of players turning up earlier than they would have normally in order to prepare for majors (even a day or two)
Certainly seen new outfits being worn, special bags etc

Its not just about performance though is it... or is it!

Edit: is that what club champs mean, Win/PB or bust

I guess it must depending on why you play but I'd have thought at amateur level its not quite as critical as that

It's a justification for playing both days on the weekend. Other than that I don't treat it any different really. Finish my round, quick drink and a sarnie with FC's then off home to wife and baby

Ok I wonder then if its how the club treat their championship weekend that might also have a bearing on how players treat it i.e if its not uber special for the club then I guess why would it be for players

Ours is over two days so meal after day one, drinkies get together in the evening, golf shirts/caps etc, presentations after play on day 2, multiple local business & membership sponsorship of holes etc and other social aspects, which all seem to work pretty well in making it feel special

edit: partners & significant others in attendance too

I guess club champs also means different things to different clubs. Ours is drawn, 2 tee start and 2 rounds in a day. Quick (normally very quick) lunch break and a small presentation to the winners afterwards. A big deal isn't made about it whatsoever!

Ours is this weekend - handicap order on Saturday and I am out at 10.50 - Sunday, worst out first. Will roll up at 9.30, quick fry up, maybe a quick pint of Peroni, a quick put to see how scare I should be and then out! May retire to the balcony afterwards for a few more and watch people make fools of themselves on the 18th!! Walk home, taxi back in the morning! Would be happy with 2 rounds of 90 but haven't managed that in the last 8 years!

Clu championships are usually won by the person who makes least mistakes because 2 rounds seriously increases the chances of that quad bogey or two.
It's a great opportunity to use strategy - decide in advance of the comp what is the safe way to play each hole, possibly even leave driver in the garage, and agree with yourself that you will always play the pitch and run rather than flop shots.
Then follow your strategy, and don't worry if you are having a duff time, so will many many others, but you will be better prepared than most.

Done the intense practice bit, the short game focus bit, loads of practice rounds. In fact you name it I've probably done it and rarely has it paid off. Played with a lot less pressure last year as a) I was having a shocking season and b) treated like another round and had my best finish.

All I want to do in round one is make the cut and play the next day. Can't win or get a good finish if you miss the halfway cut. Other than that, go out and try and enjoy it like every other game
