Footballers non wearing of poppies.

Will this ever end. It will become less of a divisive argument and a non political emblem if it where down to the individuals choice 100% of the time on 100% of the occasion. No one should ever be criticised or even asked why/why not if they choose to wear or choose not to.

Freedom of choice, freedom of opinion and freedom to express or not express one's opinion. It should be that simple

It was, until it was appropriated as a symbol by extreme groups. They use it as a way of sowing divisions in society. They are turning it into a rallying symbol, behind which they expect people to be too afraid to not comply.

It's a great shame that certain groups are using it to reignite conflicts that it's supposed to warn us against.....

Well said.

Of course it is not helped by the poppy police going into overdrive every time a BBC presenter, politician etc is not wearing one from 1st October.
As a lad nearly every adult wore a poppy for a few days before 11th November. It would be great if we could get back to that.
Very few folk wearing poppy's now where I live, mainly just the auld yins.

Even your sensible posts are spoilt by your constant moaning about the BBC.
ITV and SKY presenters are also all wearing poppies!

You are as guilty as the next by constantly going on about it being political, stating you won’t wear it because it’s political and then constantly going about BBC presenters wearing one when it’s worn by all in the media. And poppy police ? I even suggest that you are highly ranked within the force.

On poppies but a slightly different take - happened to have to drive through Arborfield (Berkshire) this morning. Every telephone or power pole and most street signs had a great big poppy stuck to it. Yes there is the Army garrison close by - but the poppies rather overwhelmed the village...I understand why the poppy presence given the garrison - but it felt just a little bit over the top. And I had never seen that done anywhere else.

Lots of places/people have took a bit more interest this year, I believe it’s because of it being the 100th Anniversary of the end of WW1.

They are there every year when you go through Garrison Towns - especially ones that would of housed regiments that lost lots of people in both wars - also lots of villages have put up signs because of the 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1

We always have a Shotgun on Remembrance Sunday at 9am with a hooter for the silence at 11.00. This year we're going to meet at 10.00 for bacon rolls and coffee then all muster on the putting green at 10.55 for the silence by the flagpole and wreath laying then Shotgun at 11.15 .94 signed up so far

People, villages, towns etc are doing a little extra this year due to the 100 yr anniversary. A few places have been on the local news up here for similar efforts.

Fair enough. Just never come across it before and was a wee bit taken aback. And to avoid misunderstanding I am not saying I didn't like it or thought it was wrong or inappropriate. Just - wow...

For example, lots of people are knitting poppies. It is a 'thing' for this year. These are being brought together by WI, community groups, churches etc and then these poppies are being spread liberally around towns and villages in big displays. My MIL has done some and I have seen requests from groups online asking for them to be dropped off. It feels like a big push to commemorate the 100yr anniversary.

I assume, never assume as I always tell my kids, that things will scale back a bit next year.
