Footballers non wearing of poppies.

I honestly believe that it should be mandatory and any England/Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland teams should also wear them in the internationals played over this time.

Agreed, but here's a curve ball, every single person you see on TV around this time of year is wearing one, i.e. football pundits/newsreaders/xfactor judges, contestants etc etc, do you believe everyone of they does it through choice or not wanting to look out of place and be subsequently criticised.
Yes the backing dancers on X factor were wearing them on top of chemical warfare suits!

If you want to do , if you don’t that’s ok

I agree...… not right that a symbol of Remembrance is now being used as a weapon...… what was feared when they wanted to prevent poppies on shirts, in the first place.

It was only mid to late 2000's when teams started weaing poppies on shirts, for 60+ years they never bothered. It just looks to me like a good PR exercise for clubs.

Have a minute silence at ALL games on the sunday before the 11th and leave it there.

It may well be a company policy in some organisations that a poppy is worn by customer facing personnel. It may be felt that by not doing so, an individual is bringing an element of disrepute on the organisation.

The BBC and far right political and religious organisations have made the wearing of a poppy a political statement. Shame on them.
I have not worn one for years because of that.
I pay my respects in my own quiet way, I do not want to be associated with those types.

Picture of a guy with a swastika tattooed on his neck wearing a poppy is a good example of a very confused individual.

Matic was a 12yr old boy when he experienced the bombing of his homeland by NATO, McClean wasn’t even born when Bloody Sunday took place.

To me it is McClean who has politicised it, he could wear a poppy in remembrance of all the Irish Catholics who died in WW1 and WW2 or in memory of the civilians killed by the IRA.
People need to move on from past troubles, otherwise these resentments will fester.

The Queen lost family to the IRA and yet she managed to get past personnel loss and shake hands with both Adams and McGuiness.

Well said Paul. My favourite uncle served with the Royal Irish Fusiliers in North Africa and Italy. He never talked of politics, only the friends he lost and what little he could do for their families.

So you have made it political yourself as well then because you can’t distinguish between the real reason for wearing a poppy and a very small minority who want to make it political

Everyone does have free will to wear one or not - i in some ways agree with McLean because of everything that happened in Derry but Matic has worn a poppy before and it’s very much a weak link to associate with NATO and what happened in the Balkans so I don’t agree with his reasoning

I doubt he cares what you think.

If we agree with McClean, maybe we should ask why the Germans and Italians who are employed by British Clubs and whose people suffered in WW2 are able to wear a poppy.
Matic is from a foreign country was actually there and may not of had the strength or understanding to say no.
People really can’t dismiss the sentiments still going on in the Balkans, just look at why is Shaqiri not with the LPool team tonight.

"People fought and died for your freedom! Freedom in all aspects of life except when deciding whether to wear a poppy or not, where you have to do what we say!"

Yeah, people should be able to make their own decision. So tedious when every year we get the news story 'James McClean not wearing a poppy again'. Easy being a journalist isn't it? It would be news if he changed his mind and decided to wear one, it's not news that he has remained consistent for the last 6 or 7 years.

.
What political statement is that the BBC have made? I seem to remember BBC staff facing a camera have usually worn a poppy whatever colour Government of the day.

WHAT?!!!!!!!! Millions of people DIED to ensure we can now live our lives as we now can. and we now think it's ok for those who are now benefitting from this freedom to not shpow support for those MILLIONS. Have a bloody look at yourselves!!!!!!!!

When does this argument end? what about the wars in 1800s, 1700s, 1600s, 1500s, etc Are you remembering those people, maybe you need to take a look at yourself

Masses of people have died throughout history and we here now are the result of that history

I think you might find that it was originally an idea suggested to The Royal British Legion as a means to raise more funds to assist Veterans and serving personnel with the shirts being auctioned off to fans during the year.
