Before playing I tend to warm up by hitting a few 6 irons into the indoor net. I tend to get a really nice strike (probably because I am only trying to hit it the 3 yards into the net), with a nice rhythmic swing.

So now I am 160 yards from the middle of the green. I know from previous experience that a solid hit with a 6i will get me there. So I have a nice practice swing (very reminiscent of the ones in the nets), take my stance, ease the club back..... and then have a mighty thrunge at the ball, which goes about 30 degrees left, off the toe, and about 100 yards forwards.

Why?

If I ever connected properly at that speed, the ball would carry the green and put me in the bundu at the back. I had plenty of club, so why does my brain feel the need to intervene?

I am currently doing this with every club in the bag (except the putter, which is hot).

It is like a monster taking over my body at the top of the back swing.

This sounds so familiar at the moment, except my "good" bit is my chipping.

Why can't we dissengage the brain and just hit the damn thing?

Murph.

I obviously can't answer the 'why'. But I do understand where you're coming from. Nice easy practice swing, then, trying to knock the skin of the ball when it comes to the real stroke.
I'm now trying not to see the ball when I atually go to hit it. I just try and pretend that it's not there!! Not unlike a few other things at the moment!!

I think it's part of the reason why we love this frustrating game. I can go around 16 holes playing fine, but after the last 2 holes feel like snapping my clubs. Alternately, I can play like a blind drunken one armed monkey for 17 holes, but then birdie the last hole and then I walk away smiling, choosing to only remember the good shots.

Getting a decent level of consistency is what we're all after I think. I've lost count of the times I've performed my practise swing, told myself not to lift my head.

I then swing the club, lift my head thin the shot 1 foot over the green.

Stupid game anyway !! :)

Oh how this thread gives me heart! I now realise that I'm not the only one to, hook it,slice it,shank it,thin it ,fat it, you name it, everything it! :D But all the time knowing that I actually can hit a sweetly struck 6iron that lands up 6-12 foot from the pin, or a stonking drive struck right out of the sweet spot that flies high and rolls on and on! The latter, not often enough at the moment.

But I never ever give up, 'cos I know it's there, somewhere :( :o :D

Golfmmad.

I have never, ever, seen anyone hit the ball with the same swing that they practice.

It is equally strange that on any shot of more than 140 yards we believe that no matter the club, the ball cannot possibly carry the distance unless we belt the living hell out of it,
and on any shot of less than 80 yards, we believe that no matter what the club, and no matter how gently we swing, the ball will fly across the green into the bundu - that is until we leave it stuffed in the front bunker!

I think my swing is well known on here and is probably the fastest around which is not a boast and something I've started work on to eliminate. However I know that if I swing slower everything gets out of kilter and I end up hitting worse than just allowing my blur to do its own thing. Having been cut 2 shots in the last month it can't be doing too badly.

However I've seen players with a slow and sedate practice and then look like they've been plugged into the mains when it comes to hitting the ball.

Tempo tempo tempo my good man. I saw a great tip once. Counting. Count 1 to start your backswing, 2 at the top of your backswing and 3 at impact.....with an equal time-space between. Takes a bit of getting used to but it really helps me to stop throwing the kitchen sink at the ball.
