Have you asked for the flag to be tended in the last year.

I played against a guy a a knockout years ago (before the rule change) who asked for the flag to be attended on every putt longer than a tap in, even for 4 or 5 footers (I had to be quick pulling the pin sometimes to avoid the ball hit it). I assume it was some sort of ploy to put me off. I seemed to spend all my time on the green holding the flag for him and not having any time to study my putts. It was irritating and felt like it was wasting my time that could have been better employed playing my game.
As with all these childish games it didn’t work as it just made me concentrate a bit harder than usual on beating him.
However I can definitely say it really did waste my time.

For info since the rule change I have never asked or been asked to tend the flag,

@D-S The voice of reason. 👏

We played a 4bbb match

Opponents wanted the flag in - we have the flag out

They refused to play out of turn

So we had to take the flag out when we putted , we had to put the flag back in for them , we then had to take the flag back out again

It added lots of extra time

I have also had it a scratch match away where they wanted the flag in for every single putt and again didn’t want to play out of turn

Tending the flag on both occasions would have helped with place of play

Do you think that was also a ploy 🤔

Surely a “voice of reason” - is to just be respectful of players and use common sense

At least it only one of you had to take the flag out when the other was putting quite simple really, in 4 ball there is always one of you to do this, 2 people at all times are not occupied with either putting or the flag - not the case in singles.

Just ask your opponent, next time you play singles, to attend the flag every time you putt - my guess is, if you asked him at the end of the round whether you had wasted his time, his answer is extremely likely not to be no.

It still delays play , and it’s happened in single matches as well

It just shows that there is no “right way” - it’s just what works best for people

Every now and then the tending the flag debate comes up and it’s always the same sneering of people who for their own reasons at times will ask for a flag to be attended

For me it’s no different to someone asking for the flag back in every time

TBF I've not encountered anyone who wants the flag back in after its out , once out it stays out.

To me it is different, if someone wants the flag in you can just pop it in as you go past or they can do it themselves, not bothering you at all.
Attending the flag requires you to be there as they are about to and whilst they putt, quite difficult for them to do it themselves .

As I said they just wanted to flag in so we had to take the flag out , and then put it back in for them because we wanted to out

Not everyone works to the same hymn sheet

Tending the flag is not difficult and as soon as they putt out it comes

It’s not the hardship being portrayed

Not much has changed since the last time

Except this is a poll to see who actually does it. Unsurprisingly the majority do not. But I'm surprised that still quite a few do

How is it wasting time standing there holding a flag - what time is wasted exactly , what else would you be doing instead
If you are a two ball or even a three ball and have not played you could be assessing your own putt. It is certainly taking time that could be used elsewhere.

It’s just about being sensible at the end of the day , no need to attend the flag until they are ready to putt and at that stage PP will be still and quiet

why dont you like putting with the flag in? Do you have it out for all putts where you can see the hole ?
