Hi all,

So Ive played occasional, sociable golf for a number of years, got serious in October about playing regularly. Joined a local club, and Im out tomorrow hoping to get my first card signed to go towards my handicap, with a couple of members I don't know.

Ive been playing reasonably well in the last month, and practising HARD. But hoping nerves don't get the better of me.

Any advice most welcome!! and what were others experience of going through the process.:confused:

My one and only advice would be - enjoy it , it's our hobby so relax and have some fun - it's a great game. Forgot the bad shots and enjoy the good ones , enjoy your company and get to know them and then once the final shot has been hit - have a drink and laugh in the bar after

This!

i always try and remember the ONE good shot I've played In a round. No matter how bad the rest were lol

Have a quick word with the partners before you go out. Explain the situation and your concerns but I'm sure they'll put you at your ease. Don't try and play glory shots, and if you hit a bad one get it back in play as quickly as you can. If you are unsure how to proceed under the rules, ask before you do anything, certainly before touching or moving the ball. Above all, go and enjoy it. The worse that can happen is you'll start off 28 when the cards are in. It doesn't matter and you'll get better and come down as you play more and learn to play competitive golf and how to handle the pressure. Good luck and play well

Thanks guys much appreciated. the rules thing is definitely one to watch out for, playing socially, if you hit one in the bushes you just drop one. Having to go back and play another ball will be interesting!! Looking forward to the challenge and playing with some new people.

Never forget that a really bad hole is not the end of the world when you're doing a card for handicap. Once you have gone 2 over par on a hole, it doesn't matter, as, however more than that you take, it will be adjusted down to 2 over par. So don't let one really bad hole affect the overall game - just concentrate on not doing it again and again.

iirc the 'rules' around supplementary cards have been changed such that you can play them under a stableford arrangement. Does / can the same be said for cards for hcp as in the OP situation - it would seem more sensible than having to got back to tee etc etc when +2 is all that will ever be factored for a given hole when assessing hcp?
