First tee nerves

If it makes you feel any better, whatever you do can't get any worse than this...

A few years ago at our annual society weekend away, I had the pleasure of hitting the first tee shot of our group of 30. This doesn't bother me, I've done it loads of times before. So amongst all the banter I take my swing and looked up to watch my ball flying down the middle of the fairway but it was nowhere to be seen. I turned to the masses to see if anyone had seen it but everyone was as bemused as me. I bent down to pick my tee up only to see the ball buried in the sodden ground about 6" in front of it. For a brief second, I thought about pretending I hadn't seen it but what would be the fun in that :D

I did the same thing last year at a charity event, fortunatley it was on the 7th, tee box was very wet, I topped my drive, the ball burried itself about 3 inches into the ground and about 18inches from the tee, it had so much spin, it popped out of the hole it had made, back over my head, landed behind me and rolled forward to about 3 inches from my tee. My dad, my friends dad and a colleague from work all said they had never seen anything like that before.

My second was from the tee box with my 3 wood which I smashed up the middle.

The reality will be legs shaking, sweaty palms, 10 billion thought processes going on, so the best bet would then be to pick the ball up and throw it towards the hole, but in doing I probably pull a muscle or dislocate my shoulder

Sounds like a night in with the missus :o

I always use a lowish iron off the first tee, most 1st holes are shortish par 4s, so a 5 iron + 8 iron is all that is needed.

I should be so lucky, 432 yards to a green that is elevated 10 foot above the fairway on 3 sides. OOB 15 yards from the left hand side all hte way down the hole and massive trees all the way down the right, it would not be too bad but the fairway is not exactly the widest. I would love a nice easy starting hole that I could just hit a long iron off.......

I find that people who give you stick on the 1st tee ...no names being mentioned (bluewolf aka known as Danny and Stu_C also known as a ....)...are normally the ones you beat

Are they? Come to my course and see how far that philosophy will get you with a 475 yard par 4!

Tough opener ;)

Pha, thats 2x 7 irons and a flick with a wedge for all you big hitters asp as you would be the ones getting 2 shots on a hole of that lenght anyway;)

First tee nerves/excitement are brilliant. The mixture of fear of a stinker and excitment of hitting a good one in front of watching people is a great part of golf imo. This first couple of times you do it you will be more nervous than anything but after you have done it a few times its a part of the game you will enjoy.

Pah, not as an index 7 I don't :(

OOB ditch all down the left, tree's down the right, ditch across the fairway at the bottom of slope of around 20 yards and sits at around 300 yards so the big hitters have to lay-up or roll in.

Its a naughty 1st starting hole for sure ;)

I used to be terrible with first tee nerves, so bad that I wouldn't sleep the night before a competition. Played in so many comps now with various people watching that it doesn't bother me anymore. I learnt that even if you do completely mess up your first shot, everyone has a good laugh, probably yourself included, but the round continues with plenty of time to make up for it. Besides, I bet you're not the only one with first tee nerves and probably won't be the only one to not make it past the ladies. Pants down, sir!

Just so you know mate, the first may be a short par 3 but the green is on top of a little hill and is well guarded. Hope you're good at flop shots if you miss it. ;)

We're all a good bunch in the NE lot, it's all a bit of a laugh. Just don't go romping home with 40+ points on a bad weather day (you know who you are) and you'll get on with the lot of us. :D

Just remembered one of my colleagues on a golf day at the PGA course at the Belfry.

At least one air shot, a few other horrors and I think he'd advanced it to the flowerbed 25 yards rightish of the tee after 5.

I know I'm going get ome stick for this, but this coming Sunday a few of us are having a round at Cleveland, I'm told that as the newbie :mmm: i'm first off and I fear that there will be a small gallery watching well potential 19 other people.

Don't worry, there'll be no stick or micky taking...

Nervous much.... haha!

I 100% guarentee it will be no worse than my tee at NUGC in our december meet, I swung everything at it and it came of the inside of the heel... went about ten yards forward and 20 to the left!!

Wonder who was playing with you that day...

(* disclaimer * ) ........ The part about Brian / Hobbit NOT being the type to take the 'michael' was a BLATANT LIE
He is for sure , 1 of the Nicest Guys u will have the pleasure of meeting and playing golf with , a cracking fella , who will put u at ease, but give him some ammo, and for sure 1 of the biggest wind-ups out there..........:)

All lies...We will discuss knitting patterns & is it best to mix hot and cold milk when making(talking) Horlicks...:ears:

Seriously, You've got nowt to worry about. They are a great bunch.... just don't wind Moogie up about his glass eye that keeps falling out.

Take your putter ????????

Tee it high and let rip !!! I remember good ol TimGolfy's on the first at Beau Desert, he pegged a 3w real low and I thought at the time he should just try and muller a driver ..... the rest is forum history

Club comps and matches I can handle. Hit it and go from there and deal with the outcome. I don't even mind forum meets as the banter is savage regardless and so a cock up off the 1st just adds spice. Biggest nerves I've had in a long while were the GM Centenary events at St Pierre, and especially in the final where I was the runt of the group off my handicap. Funny thing is I tend to feel nerves more coming home with a good score going on. A bad tee soht on the 1st can be repaired, but a bad drive off the 18th can't

Worst ever first tee nerves?

Captains' Drive In.
The good news is that I had the longest drive by 170+ yards.

The bad news was that the Seniors' Captain was hospitalised on the day.
The Club Captain had a dislocated shoulder so hit his tee shot with one arm and moved it less than 2 feet.
