Hi folks,

I'm a 64yo beginner, who has been playing for 3 years, Getting regularly under 100 these days, but just as regularly having awful >100 rounds.

in a week's time I will play my first ever comp. It's just a friendly golf day, organised by a local pub, but it'll be the first time I've played with anyone other than a small group of mates. As a practice today, I played 18 and was truly awful - couldn't hit driver, woods, irons or wedges. Just about scraped along with the putter.

Any advice on how to cope in my comp next week?

This is easier said than done But reduce Tension as much as you can . Swing easy , don’t leather it

Think about your good shots, not your bad ones. Golf is there to enjoy, if you can get round in under 100 even if only occasionally you will be hitting some good shots, enjoy those ones and have fun there will be other similar golfers.

With golf, a good round always follows a bad round (and vice versa). You were probably a bit uptight and trying too hard in your practice round, as said above, just relax and enjoy it. Let your playing partners know it is your first competition and they will probably help you when you need it and get you into the swing of it. Don’t overthink it, just another round of golf. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

If lots of us just copy/paste this post the OP won't go far wrong (y)
(btw it applies to mental tension as well as physical tension)

This 👆

It’s just hitting a ball with a stick the same as you have thousands of time before.

In the great scheme of things how I play golf and score don’t really matter; what matters is that I can play and remain grateful for that, and that I have it in my life.

I suggest that you hold on to that for yourself. We are not as young as we once were. 👍

A little tip from me. Apart from bunkers forget your wedges. If you're 50 yeds from the green use an 8 iron bump and run.
With baked fairways etc it's really easy to top the ball with a wedge. Save yourself lots of shots!
Good luck.👍

It's all just golf.
Other than playing strictly by the rules (?), there's really nothing special about playing in almost any competition, so treat it the same as any other round and just enjoy it (good or bad).

As others have said, tell your playing partners it is your first comp and ask them to keep you straight. They should then keep an eye on you and make sure there are no silly mistakes that could cost you in terms of penalty shots, take the pressure out of filling in the card. It's all simple enough but if no one tells you.......

Don't feel pressure about your own golf, your playing partners won't care as long as pace of play is okay. They will be thinking about their own game, not looking at yours.

Enjoy, it's meant to be fun (y)
