Having not picked up a club for 2 weeks I was not expecting much from the first comp of the year. How surprised was I at the result, 23 points on the front 9, 20 on the back and sitting at the top of the leaderboard on 43. The most pleasing aspect today was not 3 putting a single hole.

Sadly no handicap cuts until April otherwise my handicap would be under 20 for the first time ever.

Yes, winter comps are off the yellows so course considerably shorter and with the rough cut right down as well the challenge is nowhere near the same as in the Summer

So surely the yellow ('forward competition tees') par and SSS if there are measured (which if the whites are, I would be pretty sure they are) should allow for the competition to a qualifying one...?

The rough/challenge has nothing to do with it....

Weird, I heard today that non-qualifiers only count for category 1 and everyone else should be cut accordingly - is this little tidbit of information not true?

Not sure of all the reasons behind the club not adjusting handicaps at this time of year and as my aim is to get mine down as low as possible I would be happy for the cut.

You'd think the club would take the opportunity of cutting whoever plays well in crap conditions. I don't understand it myself, seems one rule for one course/comp and different for another.

No it's either qualifying or not.....
That's what I thought but the asst pro told me that in the non-qualifier tomorrow you can't get cut if you're category 1, all the rest do.

Don't understand it myself, just typing what I was told. I just hit the ball and let other people worry about all that adding stuff :)

BTW GB72, congrats on your good round! :)

JOUK...no they can't do that - unfortunately lack of understanding of CONGU clubs leads to players having 'false' handicaps (in both directions) and to be honest does a diservice the ones who apply the rules properly....

It is a shame that you don't need any training/knowledge to be a handicap secretary....

Yeh, that's fair enough although I do think it actually makes sense to cut the higher handicappers, heck if they can beat their h/cap when the course is like a bog then they SHOULD be cut in my opinion.

Am i right in thinking that if it's 'pick and place' including all closely mowd area's then it can not effect the handicap?

My place isnt lifting these rules till April 1st so I cant shift my handicap till then!

Good points tally none the less BG!

I thought you could get cut if its lift and place not sure though!!!

Preferred Lies and Embedded Ball rules as per the R&A are fine for handicap purposes (the made up irish rules for wetness are not though)...

Clubs are actually supposed allow/give members as much opportunity as possible to play in qualifying competitions to get their handicaps adjusted...it would be clear some clubs seem to be doing the complete opposite...

People forget that if the course/conditions are so hard then the CSS will go up accordingly and maybe even make the competition a reduction only or no increases affair...

Thanks Sam.... How about if we're using Matts instead of the yellow pegs on some holes? I Suppose that cancells the SSS then, making it non qualifying?

As long at the course (tees you play from) is within 100 yards from the measured course ('the pegs') then you're okay...doesn't matter what you play off from the tee....
