after 18months of hacking around and hittin 109 today i give up.
Ive finally booked my first lesson. Got it 6pm tuesday evening. They offered 1 lesson for £25 for 40 mins or 6 lesson for £100.
Gone with the 1 to start to see if i think i am going to learn then i will prob make a block booking if i think its worthwhile. If not i will prob try somewhere else as am fed up of inconstancy. 3 b2b pars today and i still walked away with an outragous score and one was on the si1.

Any tips on what to expect or what i should do before or after?

yip it could get worse. Listen, practice and if needed make notes when you get home so you don't forget. Above all you need to put all your trust in the pro, try not to doubt him but again, practice!

Happy golfing!

Sorry for the hijack, but which pro are you using Scouser? IIRC you live nr the course at Rainford. The reason I ask is that ive just started some lessons there with Sean Bailey and they're working well...

I do live near there yeah and have played there....I am using a bloke at Beacon park in skem

so im looking at a long slow progress but eventually something might click and my scores will drop.. im aiming for low 20s come end of the season but not sure if thats being to ambitious.

Depends how much you practice and how natural a change comes to you!

Had a friend who done a joint lesson with me (I had a few first and had been getting better) my mate got mucg worse and the next time we played he went home after 9 holes informing me 'I cant hit a ball after the lesson', so there is a good chance you will get worse before you get better, but trust your pro it will work I have gone from shooting 126 to 93 in about 5 months. Think I may go for a handicap soon.

Always aim high mate, reach for the stars. Even if you fall short, you may end up holding the moon....:)

You don't always get worse with lessons. Think about what you are being told and visualise the changes.. Practise hard at the range, then swing freely at the course.. It will be a good move..

@Scouser.. Nice track at Ashurst Beacon. I can actually see the Beacon from the back of my house..

Only played it one thought some of the holes were a bit of a killer....there is one were you are slightly below the fairway and you play up a hill then through trees and the fairway slopes to the right.....and I think its the 18th that is over a hill as well. Having never played it before didnt have a clue were to hit the ball lol

i did the same ,this is what i did ,,after one lesson the day after i went to the course never ever do that, i nearly put my clubs on ebay,,go to the range at least 4/5 times before going to the course ,when you go to course go by yourself & don't score until you feel the changes are getting better, do this about 10 times, i only say this ,so when your shots don't go good, just drop another ball & practice the shot again, you will need this sort of practice if you want to get used to the changes

half way through this program i had another lesson just to check up on the changes he made

after 8 weeks from my 2nd lesson I'm ready for another check up lesson from the pro

my golf as defiantly improved for the better ,,one thing i will say ,,its very easy making things worse, but in the long run you will be a better golfer

i was a 17hc golfer before the lessons ,& for the first time in 8 weeks i managed to have a round at 17hc

so good look with your lesson you will be a happier golfer in the long run,,,i hope i have helped you will need it

:blah: :one:

My advice would be to get there early and hit some balls to warm up properly. Be honest with the pro about the state of your game and what you are trying to achieve. Listen to what he says and if you don't understand what he trying to get you to do or why he's making the changes - ASK. Be prepared to invest plenty of range time in practicing the drills and changes he shows and if you can't get it whe you've worked on it, go back to him and explain what youa re doing and whats happening

Had a few lessons last year after scoring a dismal 24 stapleford points.... albeit 14 on the back nine.

Hit a couple of 7 irons to show the Pro what i could do - both high fairly straight and within 5 minutes my grip had changed and i couldn't get the ball of the ground.

Fast forward 5 months and i scored 36 points at the London Club.

Did an lot of practice betwen lessons but they eventually started paying off.

Am starting them again this week and want to also work on course management and also get a proper practice schedule in place rather than just beating balls.

Can say to you Connor that you will be very lucky to not get worse but stick with it and it will pay off - let us all know how you get on.

accept that it's likely he will want to change your fundamentals.. grip / posture / alignment etc which will feel so incredibly strange that you'll think he can't possibly be right... go with what he says, it's easier to get used to these changes than you initially think, and will pay massive dividends just getting the simple things correct..

As a 28 handicapper who has been returning around 100 off the winter tees I decided to take up an offer from the club pro for 6 30 minute lessons for £80.

The 1st lesson was restricted to the static elements i.e. grip, alignment and ball position. The second lesson was taken up with an alteration to my backswing.

The difference is immediately tangible. I am striking the ball better, longer and more consistently - AND I STILL HAVE 4 LESSONS TO GO!

If the remaining lessons do nothing I have easily had my money's worth already IMO although I'm hoping he can help improve my short game before we complete the set of 6.

In all probability, you will get way worse. You just have to believe in what he teaches you, and then practice, a lot. A lot isn't just an hour or two, it is a lot. This is the sort of thing where if you can get it right now, will save years of angst. Even if the practice doesn't seem to be going anywhere, it will make sense eventually.

I also think you will find it hard to make a judgement on your chosen coach after just one lesson, unless you take an instant dislike to him. He is a golf coach, not a miracle worker, so inevitably it won't be a quick tweek, and you'll have a swing like Luke Donald, it'll be a work in progress.

You also need to outline what you want from the process. If it is just to shoot 100, then maybe a tweek will do it. If it is to progress to shooting, 90, then 80, then 70, then what he teaches you may be different.

Oh crap, I'm not going for my lesson then......

Since I started to actually try, and use the corrections I was suggested, I've gone from 180yd drives down fairway (or 220 into the trees most of time) and around the course in 105-115, to now, 20yd drives sliced - YES TWENTY - and round in about 130. If I go for my lesson I surely can't get worse.

had me lesson today. had a major change about how close i stod to the ball. felt like i was stretching for it but could def feel a better swing through it. Still a bit close but alot better. have posted another thread regards my thoughts
