Hey guys, i am not that clued up on shafts, basically i went for a distance finder session with my pro last week, he has thrown me a curve ball suggesting my driver shaft is no longer right for me. My swing has slowed a lot in the last year due to some changes and its now not right for me.

I have currently a 55g aldila Stiff shaft, but cut 1.5" at the tip to play like an X-stiff. He is telling me its too stiff and too light and has suggested something closer to 70g and stiff.

Any suggestions?

if its interesting, my distance are below, i was surprised on some and some of the gaps are quite indifferent! especially on the longer irons where the gap closes, and the very long end of the bag not a huge difference at all! All are carry and no roll distance..

52 wedge - 90yrds
PW-120yrd
9 - 135yrd
8 - 150yrd
7 - 165yrd
6 - 178yrd
5 - 190yrd
4 - 200 yrd
4hy - 215yrd
5wd - 225yrd
driver - 240yrd

Decent enough gapping through the bag
BUT
Your biggest gap is between PW and GW.............30yds......!!!

This is caused by the Strong PW 45 degs
your GW being 52 degs

A new 50 degs GW would probably help that gapping out...........??

yeh i know that gap has always been a problem for me, especially as i cant hit a 3/4 PW well, so from 110 yrds i do struggle! would rather be at 130 than 110!

This has got me thinking now, I was tempted to make my bag an all Mizuno bag and have been looking at the Mizzy drivers, but as I have a 913 D2 I and to love the club, maybe asking for a shaft fitting on my current club would be money better spent.

Off on Friday so may have to have a ponder on this.

WHY.......??

Are u hitting it badly.....??
Were u NOT Custom Fit for this club in the 1st instance......??

There is such a thing as CF Overkill
and as they say........if it aint broke..........

I'm off for a trackman gapping sesh on Sunday - interesting to see if I hit the ball the same in belief and reality!!?

Good post

Would be interesting if you / somebody going for 1 of these sessions, actually posted (beforehand) what they believed their yardages were, then came back on to post the results of the session

Just more from a stand point of ...... do we REALLY know how far we hit it......??
Are we anywhere near, even knowing.......??

Good session before season starts and could be worthwhile
A mate of mine did same recently
Couple of irons were really close, not much gapping, had lofts/lies checked, and 3 of those irons lofts were really out
So the session was worth it

I was, but that was over a year ago and my swing has changed considerably since then. It may well be that the current shaft is still the correct one for me, but then it may not be either, so a MOT can't hurt.

I assume those distances are carry... and I assuem you got them from a launch monitor as opposed to the pro eyeballing your landing area down the range?

If so, regarding the driver, do you have your stats such as clubhead speed, ball speed, launch, spin, etc? That would likely assist with any recommendations.

Ha cheers

I just think it would be interesting to see how close/far out we are in our thinking
And obviously u are a very decent golfer (H/cap) so will make a great 'guinea pig'.....;)

Id think off your handicap, u wouldnt be too far out with your guesstimates anyway

Should be interesting but its looking like you have a pretty good idea!

Those don't look like 'guesstimates' to me!

@OP. Wow! that was a serious amount of tipping!

Beauty of the R1 and other 'shaft swappable' Drivers is that it's a simple process to try them out.

So (get your Pro to) audition a few different ones. If you like the feel of Aldila, simply try the 65 or 75 versions.

Not sure that you are going to get remarkable additional distance though. You seem to be getting out out there reasonably well, so may be 'going after it' more than other clubs. If you do the same with a softer shaft, your dispersion is likely to increase markedly. So it might let you swing within yourself and get the same distance.

And if you really want to do some testing, Golf Principles in Basingstoke is close enough to go mad in!

Predictably, you are wrong.
Er. No! 'They don't look like 'guesstimates' to me' is absolutely correct!

Whether they are or not is neither here nor there.

You have a lot to learn about pedantry - though you may be learning!

228 for 3W and 248 for Driver is pretty specific for guesstimates though! 230 and 250 would be more the sort of numbers I'd expect to see as guesstimates.

Goodness me, they are miles short on average forum distances! :whoo:

Above the average for honesty and realism though? ;)

Before "Thrush" began sucking the life out of me above - the guesses were to try to get as close as poss to what the figures will show - time will tell. :)

Thanks FH. not after more distance, looking to tighten dispersion. The one i have was tipped so much as on the tour truck they had run out of the XS so tipped it.

I dont have the full details of spin etc, but he did comment how low launching all of my shots were, driver was circa 13 deg. He has suggested i just buy a new driver (from him funnily enough!) but as its the driver i won, i dont want to swap it if i can make it work better with a new shaft.

Am guessing a bit from what i recall, but club head speed was circa 95mph, ball speed around i cant remember, launch was low at around 13 degrees. Dont remember spin figures... helpful? prob not! LOL
