Am I missing something? I know they reset the points going into the Tour Championship so Rory has 2,500 Tiger 2,250 Watney 2,000 and so on.

How then can it be that anyone in the top 5 wins the playoffs if they win the Tour Championship? Fair enough if Tiger Watney etc win and Rory's nowhere!

But surely if Tiger wins and Rory's 2nd they tie on 4,750 or if Watney wins and Rory's 2nd Rory has 4,750 to Watney 4,500. I guess what I'm saying is Rory 2nd trumps anybody else winning other than Tiger (if my maths is correct) or do they give the anyone in the top 5 already bonus points for winning?

I guess they came up with it to keep interest in the Tour Championship. As Rors should have the won the playoffs after the second win on points it would not be a very interesting final leg.

It is ridiculous though, its like saying Barcelona were thumping R. Madrid in the final of the Euro League final in the first half then had their score reset to zero for the second half. If it makes it uninteresting, tough in my opinion, the better golfer is walking it so lets see who comes second. They are all getting paid well enough for it to still matter for the players.

I agree but I can see why they do it!

I just don't understand how they say that "the top 5 control their own destiny" as I said above Rory 2nd beats everyone else except Tiger if he wins the TC!

Tiger 1st (2,250+2,500=4750) Rory 2nd (2,500+2,250=4,750) Tied
Watney 1st (2,000+2500=4500) Rory 2nd (2,500+2,250=4,750) Rory wins! and so on

Never try to understand Americans!!

They only do it to make the whole thing more exciting. They don't really care who wins or if that person deserves to. It's all about viewers and advertising.

I doubt many of the players really care given the extra money this series of events can generate them.

Your figures for last event are wrong. It's 2500 for first 1500 for 2nd and 1000 for 3rd

I don't get the whole point of a playoff system to gain entry to the Tour Championship anyway...

The top 30 players on the money list are the most consistent over the year, but its not guaranteed that those those players make it to the tour championship instead the top 30 over just 4 events in august/september! So imo it offers greater reward to some players that have a burst of good events rather than a consistent season.

I know the argument would be that the most consistent should be the ones in the top 30 of both Money list and FedEx but the set up isn't designed to reflect that. E.g Poulter missed the Tour Championship a year or to back despite being inside the top 30 money winners that year.

I understand why they want a playoff system to up the interest during the NFL early season where golf normally takes a back stage seat in the states from a fans perspective, maybe the way the points are worked out will be better now that from after the Tour Championship this year the points earning starts in the Fall series instead of January now that they've axed Q-School but thats a whole new argument isn't it.

Agree - the whole thing is a farce. I'd prefer that one of the others wins it but agree that Rory should have it in the bag already unless he finishes near the bottom of the heap in the Tour Championship and one of the top few wins. The $10m prize is a joke - a desperate attempt to give some sort of validity to a title no one would otherwise care about. The whole playoffs system is just an attempt to dumb golf down to the level of an average finals orientated golf fan, in a sport that does not fit such a system.

I quite like the Fedex Cup, actually. Whittling down the numbers who qualify week on week adds an extra dimension to each tournament - every shot really matters even to guys who are going to finish well down the field. The real-time updating of each player's potential finishing position and, hence, whether they qualify for the next week or not is pretty exciting.

Agree it's a bit hard to work out what's happening in the tour championship though!

I actually thought that the event last week, apart from the majors, was probably the best golf I have seen on TV for ages when you consider the names on the leaderboard.

Its a good way to end the season and if there are more top class events like last week then a big  from me.

But the thing is, the players have bought into it. They were all sceptical at first but they now all love it. Also, it gets all the top players in the world playing 3 weeks on the spin which means crowds are up, advertising is up and money to the PGA goes up. As a marketing stunt it's genius and if like me, you don't care about how much they win but just want to see the best players play week in week out it's just brilliant. Without it, there's no way we'd have seen Rory win back to back as we did.

I look at it the same way as I do football, it's completely detached from reality on the money front but if the sponsors want to put the money up to attract the best players in the world to entertain us fans that's up to them and I'm not going to argue.

So that would be all of America then!!
I have to say the constant 'In the Hole' shouts do grate but the quality of golf is top drawer. I am not the septic's biggest fans anyway and the crowds at some of the events in the States just re-enforce this for me.

Invented as a marketing tool to get the top players to extend their seasons long after the USPGA it has been a huge success on that front. I really don't care too much about the rankings but just enjoy the best players going about their business
