Faldos last Open

Having recently watched the BBC's 1987 and 1992 broadcasts of Faldo's wins, I wish him very happy memories!

I'm certain he'll be generously applauded all the way around - as will Tom and Freddy (though I wish he wouldn't wear slippers!).

I've birdied 15 too, though I was actually on a roll of good holes until it was followed by an 8 on 16!

Some fabulous saves by Faldo in 1992 and some absolutely wonderful putting by Azinger, only to 'blow up' on the last 2 holes!
Ive got the 93 Open dvd, Azinger really blew it big time,he must look back on that nowdays and rue the chance he had!

After winning his last major in Scotland , i can't remember the year, he sent a bottle of whisky to every golf club in Scotland. How many others have did that , so let him play hope he wins.:cheers just remembered 1992 MUIRFIELD

Sandy Lyle stuck a plaster on his putter to stop the glare of the sun, and Faldo reporting him (from memory )

A bit more to it than that.
Lyle, ignorant of the rule about altering clubs, stuck a bit of plaster on his putter to stop the sun's glare. Faldo noticed but instead of saying at the time and Lyle getting a couple of penalty shots, he waited until Lyle had signed his card and was therefore disqualified.
Worst sportsmanship I've ever known from a professional golfer!

I thought my wife could hold a grudge, but 33yrs would be pushing it, even for her.

I think you'll find he reported it during the round to the referee.

I'm glad he's playing. He's earned the right, in the sweat and dust of the arena. Surprised there's so many that would begrudge him. Would they have said the same about Jack, Arnie, Gary, Tom or Seve?

Will be fun to watch him. Might surprise a few.

I always find that story strange.......Faldo did the right thing as Sandy did not know the rules and he gets all the grief.
Would folk rather he ignored the fact that Lyle broke the rules.
Remember if you sign a card knowing your playing partner has broken the rules you will be disqualified.

I think the grief came because he didn't tell Sandy himself, and Faldo's side of it is that he was 'asking' the referee about it rather than dobbing him in.

Crazy that it's still being talked about all these years later when they've both won so much and had amazing success ever since.

Looking at Sir Nick's round today, he had a pretty decent front 9 but lost it a bit on the back 9. He'll need to play pretty well tomorrow to make the cut i would've thought!

It wouldn't have mattered when he reported it to the referee. The penalty at the time was disqualification!

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE: Disqualification

faldo went around in the same score as the world no2 why do people say that he should not be there. I call them ignorant fools

Because the world number 2 is playing like a complete novice - to make out Faldo is doing alright because he shot the same 8 over as McIlroy is just plain daft and doesn't really strengthen the argument
