Sad truth is that I came off facebook, deleted my account etc in 2012 but have recently gone back on because it's a great way to stay in touch with those friends and family you don't see on a regular basis.

I don't have any colleagues on it (this time) and don't intend to send friend requests to any. If any of them ask me.... well.... I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!

If a work colleague sends a request(and they do) I do not respond to it, neither yes or no, I just leave it.

If they asked (and they never have) I would not be embraced to tell them I don't mix real life and work life from a professional point of view.

The only reasons I still keep mine are:

It's good to communicate with lots of people at once, particularly uni friends whom I don't see much
My dad is a photographer and I like seeing his work on there and what he's up to
I have several thousand pics of me and my friends from when I joined and if I were to delete my account would lose these
It's good for seeing when bands are playing and what events are on locally
Some of the golf stuff from the PGA / GM etc is interesting and posted regularly

I guess there are more reasons than I thought.

That said, I work in a media environment and never talk about work unless it's in a positive light. If I were to slag off one of our artists, and someone wanted to, it could turn into a story about 'Universal Music staff criticise own artists' etc which are a lot of hassle! Especially as I work in corporate comms!

Since we're talking about it - I had a look - so whats's the difference between Close Friends and Friends. My setting was defaulted to Close Friends under Who Can See My Stuff. Do I leave it at that?

Close friends is just a list that you can add your "friends" to. It's basically a way to categorise your friends and keep posts / what you share etc separate. Then when / if you post you can say share with any list you like. The setting you have will mean it's only people you have added to the Close Friends list that will see status updates unless you specify otherwise.

I like seeing what my children are doing at Uni and what my son is doing with his band and his promotions company. Also I have a lot of relatives on facebook and it is nice and easy way to keep in touch with them - and we're much more in touch today than we have ever been, And that is nice - and that is down to Facebook. Other than that ...

OK - I think I get that. So does that mean only Close Friends will see stuff I post that is displayed on my Home page - and is it only me who see my Hogan page?

I just deleted my account. Why people feel the need to tell everyone that they're at the gym, what they've had for tea or that they're child is ill is beyond me.

Do you not remember cooking an awesome meal, getting your kodak out, taking a picture then running down to Jessops and paying for the 1 hour service and then going round all your mates houses and showing them whilst saying 'nom nom'? :(

Facebook saves so much time!

Hahaha oh I remember it well.

I don't have any colleagues or managers on my friends list. If I ever get friend requests which is often do to the large company I work in immediately put those that have tried add me onto my blocked list then ignore their request.

Quite often people have mentioned to me about adding me after I've ignored them and I just honestly say I don't add people from work because I believe in keeping work and life separate. Yes the odd person has been put out by it but I don't care I'd rather that them see my personal life and feel they have the right to discuss it in the office.

If you only have Close Friends as the list set up under the settings who can see posts or see what others post then yeah. I don't know what your Hogan page is....

My Hogan page is the one that I go to when I click on my name (top right of Facebook window). I think it just shows the stuff that I 'start' - rather than that I comment upon?

Oh I see, that is your own timeline, so yes basically just your pics, status updates etc. Not just general comments you make on other people's status updates etc. That is controlled by their own privacy settings. If you have Close Friends set to view things on your timeline, then they will see it. You can change it to be Only You though. Facebook have a clever little tool that enables you to view what your timeline would look like to the general public and specific friends within the help page. Click "View As" within Review what other people see on your timeline click that to see what each person can see.

Using FB in ignorance is not a clever idea - and I use it in ignorance

There is a simple rule to follow. Only ever post something that you would be 100% comfortable saying in public. People seem to think that once they are online the rules of decency and respect don't apply any more.
