Just been looking at todays stableford results at our course and noticed a player has had a good round and been deducted 1.8 so hes had a good round .....but on top of that he's had an extra 0.7 deducted for exceptional scoring..is this like a societies general play deduction and if so who decides??

The computer decides? If its not done by some fancy algorithm it should be (IMO).

Only reason im asking is ive never heard of ESR ....so just wanting to know is it automatically done when you put your scores in the computer for that comp or is it reviewed later on?

If you return two scores of 4 or more under CSS in a given period of time, then an Exceptional Score Reduction (ESR) will apply (except in Scotland for some strange reason). The computer system makes a recommended cut, but this can be manually overridden by the handicap committee in exceptional circumstances.

An ESR should only be 0.5 or whole shots. 0.7 sounds odd to me.

Strange numbers being reduced is usually when handicap category boundaries are crossed and people have incorrectly applied the same value to each shot reduction.

.... obviously can't say that for sure here but it usually applies when people are confused in the clubhouse discussions I've heard.

Cheers for replies ive got it now just never heard of it:o......above is copy of the players h/cap record and can see bottom line esr deduction 0.7 i'll ask the question about it and why its not 0.5 or whole shot.

Could it be that any more than 0.7 would put player into category 1?

it would be exactly that

clearly the OP hasn't read the link rickg provided............my apologies to the OP as I hadn't realised that rickg provided a link to the complete manual!

anyway; the reduction cannot be to a handicap below 5.5

Not odd, it's wrong

The reason I said odd and not wrong is that I didn't know whether the handicap secretary can exercise discretion. I know some discretionary powers are given, but do they extend to reducing the quantum if the ESR as opposed to just not enforcing it?

Even so, I don't think they should do that even if they are allowed.

HawkeyeMS is wrong, and the discretion is available. An ESR of less than 1.0 (or less than 0.5 is that is the recommendation) can be applied by the committee.

That's is some improvement, from 12 to 6 in 2 comps, especial as the handicap would have been reduced even more, except for the cat 1 restriction.

it's way better than that Louise!

12 was the initial handicap allocation last month.....and the guy has now returned a card in competition 1 under CSS
