Morning all – just wondered what you all think about the lack of Ryder Cup stars at the Welsh Open this week? Read in the paper that Monty will be asking them to play the course next year, but is that enough? Missed opportunity for my money. I know qualifying has a way to go yet, but those that think, or even expect, to get in the side will have had a chance to see the course and get familiar with it. I know many are in America, but would have expected a bit of effort from them – at least shows us they care!

This leads on to another point, there seems to be a lack of Top European stars at European events! It beggars belief that the current Open Champion was not at the PGA at Wentworth. I lost count of how many times Sky/BBC referred to it as the ‘European Tour’s Flagship Event’. Surely they’d expect, even INSIST, Harrington etc to be there? I know Poulter missed it, plus a few others - I can’t remember who.

I did read or hear something about the ET introducing new membership rules around members having to attend key events to keep their cards. Personally, I hope they do introduce something like that to ensure big names come to the big tournaments and that sponsors are secured and tournaments not dropped – as per Homer’s post regarding the British Masters. It is difficult enough to get the sponsors involved, but if they can’t guarantee top golfers will play, they will feel devalued investment and shy away or even pull out. It follows that more people tend to watch the bigger tournaments as the bigger/better players are involved – you all heard about the woods factor on audiences in America.

The arguement against is that these bigger players are members of both the European and US tours, so have to juggle a schedule – if they are in America for 6 weeks, they can’t return for a week and play a mandatory tournament midway through. Why are they in US as well? Money! Bigger prizes for sure. But also, less long haul travel. So is the Race to Dubai really working?

What do you think? Introduce new rules to ensure European Members attend key events not just the minimum number over the year? Leave it as it is? Or do something else? Would mandatory tournaments lead to some players leaving for US altogether? It’s a tricky one!

Blimey, do you want to ask a few more questions first? :D

Compulsory tournaments: Absoluetly not, how are players way down the pecking order ever expected to break into the top 20, if they are effectively excluded from the top events? Would make a tough job even tougher.

Why miss big tournies: Many players with respect to the PGA pulled out becasue of the course, just doesn't suit their game. I think that's fair enough surely? Biggest prize money of the year more or less, they're not missing it for fun that's for sure. I wish the tour would do likewise, totally sick of seeing yet another tournament from Wentworth, we have an abundance of good courses in the UK, what about using some of them?

Ryder Cup/Welsh Open: Unlike Faldo's keystone cops captaincy, I think you'll see Monty's 'request' taken pretty seriously. Doubt any will avoid it, certainly not those on the edges of a Captains pick anyway.

Should they be compelled to play it?: Well no they shouldn't, the players effectively play for free in the Ryder Cup, the rest of the year is about earning their living, and if that means that the Wales Open doesn't fit their schedule, then fair enough imo.

Leave it as it it, players have the choice of where they want to play - it's up to them how they arrange their playing schedules.

European Tour is not the biggest tour, they just have to accept that.

At least the Race to Dubai is helping attract more good players over here even if its not for the PGA at Wentworth or the Wales Open.

Harrington didn't play the PGA because he's

A, PLaying crap and
B, because he's playing crap he would have missed the cut and lost what little confidence he has for the US Open. He rarely plays well round Wentworth so why bother. Kenny Perry got stick for not playing the Open as he wanted to stay home and collect qualifying points for the RC. He got more than he would have got at the Open.

We forget sometimes that this is these guys jobs. Its how they make their money. We work in offices or shops or build things - they play golf. If they want to play here rather than there, then who are we to argue. As long as they play the required number of events to keep membership of the Tour they'll be happy.
Also, top tens in Europe won't get you far up the World Rankings and into the Majors. Top tens on the PGA will.

The top players have earned the right to pick and chose which events they wish to play in,it's a global game for those that are ranked in the top 50 which qualifies them to play in just about every tournament and as it's their job they will pick a schedule to suit them.

Compulsion, IMHO, will drive the top players away.
Wentworth by deciding to dig up their greens have accepted they are not good enough for tournament play.
Harrington made this point a few years ago and was condemned by the british press.

Harrington has said that Wentworth doesn't suit his game and so doesn't see the point playing a course he can't be competitive on. There are lots of pros who don't like the way certain courses fit their eye and so don't play them. I can see where he is coming from. I'm sure if they moved it away from Wentworth he'd support it although as that's the HQ of the tour I can't see that appening unless the greens programme runs into trouble next year

Mind you, there's only 3 players from the top 50 in the World playing the weekend at Celtic Manor.
But in USA this weekend there are 20 of the top 50 playing the weekend. Obviously the US Open is on in a couple of weeks time but there arn't many "names" in Wales this week.
