Etiquette

While in general I agree with what imurg says, however the worry for me is. What happens if people start to think it’s the norm it then begins to happen a lot, and on from that. Can you be sure these people will always let you through.. We seem to have difficulty enough getting let through much of the time as it is and I accept that is a generalisation…These issues are to my mind the thin edge of the wedge but that’s just one opinion.

Gil, I did try to respond tour your "apology", but I just missed the chance. So, here's my response:

well at least its a sincere apology eh... For what it's worth, I agree completely with your complaint. Manners cost nothing, however, what I did disagree with was personal insults. Yours and others. I agree that standards should be upheld, progress is not always good. Good luck in your future endeavours. I hope that the future treats you well. If you ever (god help you) find yourself "down wigan way", feel free to PM me for a game..

Thank you bluewolf...I thank you for your kind words. It is a very sincere apology, while making a little point about visitors, As so many seem to think we should love them all…As someone else has said all types out there…On the insults if you look back you will see my PUTDOWNS as I like to call them are reciprocal.. Look what that Dodger fellow is now saying on the thread about the old Forum site. He just can’t leave it alone.
Question… Where is Wigan. LOL that’s one of these modernisms for having a joke. You take care now

I didn't get the chance to respond to the apology thread, by the time I had finished editing my response the thread had been locked.

Now perhaps it's just me but it didn't really read like an apology; it read more like a consolidated list of all the former rants, including a number of insults, reiterated and poorly hidden behind the veil of the word apology.

But hey! what would I know being a mere prole.

I've chipped in a few things as this has meandered between the sublime and the, er strange. I sympathised with Gilbert's initial moan, and as a brainwashed golfer from when golf wore a straight jacket I do feel there are somethings lost from the game that are sad. However, Gilbert's rantings, sorry, Mr Hamblett's ramblings led me to believe he is either the best wind up merchant I've ever come across or in serious need of stronger medication. Perhaps he is that very example of the Colonel Blimp that so wound up many golfers, even 30-odd years ago.

Anyway, I digress. It probably a good thing the apology thread was locked before I posted up. In short it was at best arrogant, and the lack of respect shown to the Moderator... and relax Hobbit 2,3,4.

I'd rather agree to disagree than go on a crusade of "my way is better than your way, and you're all slobs because of it..."

Golf, like many things in life is evolving. Thankfully its far more inclusive than its ever been. Expecting it to standstill is just plain naive.

Chaps, if this descends into a Gilbert bash again I will lock it. Lets just all move on please.

OOOOhhhh, can I patent "Gilbert bash" as the new forum phrase for a handbag style ruck? I.e, they're all off having a Gilbert bash on the 4 wedge thread....Thats a cool phrase...

These sort of things come along every so often. There have been quite a few over the time iIve been on here. That said, I'd still say Flopshot has the No1 spot ;)

Anyone for a custom fitting thread to end the week ? ;)

I started this original thread and it just shows how in all walks of life we go off the subject and make it relevant to what we want to hear/read.

The original thread asked whther you would approach an unknown 8 ball on the golf course if they had done something wrong or words to that effect.

Only pleased it created some 'discussion'!

Ignorance or selfishness? Is it high up there on your horse?

Maybe you disagree, thats your perogative but please allow others to have a point of view. Your comments would be worth consideration if they were to the point and not personal, this is not the first time I have experienced your sarcasm.

I would expect better manners from a site Moderator who should know better and set an example.

Before this descends into another slanging match can we keep this on topic please.
Socketrocket, for what its worth, I have seen 5&6 balls playing round the very elitest of courses. The mentality being 'I have paid my annual subs, I can play when and how I like'.

I am stating what happens in most members clubs. More than 4 balls are not allowed, the reason is that it slows down play and affects the enjoyment of others which in my estimation is selfish. You will not see more than 4 balls playing in proffessional events.

It's fine if anyone disagrees with me, I would prefer it if they kept their comments to the matter though and not personal. My comments are to the OP's question and not intended to create insults to others.

Careful Brian. Chris posted, "I'll lock this thread..." after I posted up about Justagolfer. I can understand his wish to protect a forum member from bullying, if that's what I'm guily of, but it's a shame he wasn't as quick with Justagolfer's other direct criticisms... Its very difficult to understand what the boundaries are when they appear to be different at different times and for different people.

I am still waiting respectfully for his reply.

Surely it comes down to specific situations. If the course is dead and no-one is being held up what harm is there on a 5-8 ball playing. I have only heard the Goswick affair second hand albeit from those that were there and it has already been scrutinised to death but I would say that in the situation of it being the 18th hole and minimal (again from what I have read and been told so can't comment with any authority) surely it was a case of maybe it shouldn't have happened but did. No one got hurt, the course didn't grind to a standstill and everyone moved on. I have no issue with talking to people about etiquette if I see something I think is out of place but as long as it done in a polite manner 99% of people will be open to constructive advice

Gilbert

on "thin edge of teh wedge" issues, my personal view would be to legislate when it becomes necessary, rather than legislate now just in case it ever needs to be
