Etiquette

Before this descends into another slanging match can we keep this on topic please.
Socketrocket, for what its worth, I have seen 5&6 balls playing round the very elitest of courses. The mentality being 'I have paid my annual subs, I can play when and how I like'.

I find this surprising.

I will stick to West Sussex. Only 2 balls and foursomes allowed and anyone who tries anything else is in deep, deep trouble!

We play texas scrambles with six players, but only three balls in play. Three drive evens and three drive odds. Must admit I don't think I have ever seen more than a fourball playing a full round. Occasionally in the evening you might get five or six finishing out the last couple of holes, but if they are not holding anyone up I don't see any problem.

so what about a guy wanting a quick round on his own or a three ball?

A single is allowed of course as you won't hold anyone up and can take the dog a walk with you for a quick few holes. A 3 ball is a complete no-no though. Absolutely not allowed under any circumstance.

Not everyone would be happy with this but it is a free country and you aren't forced to be a member there. In general terms, the members are more than happy with the situation and the rules are unchanged since 1931 so you know what you are signing up for before you join.

It is a fantastic golf course and the food is probably the best I have ever had at any golf club. St Georges Hill is a close second though...

Must be good food to beat St Georges Hill. Played with a member couple of months back and we were first in for lunch. Amazing choice and quality, but unfortunately after a good stuff I had a lot of trouble swinging the club:( We did have the course to ourselves, true millionaires golf in the middle of summer.

difficult to get to know many members quickly that way, plus you'll have to hope you like the one person your allowed to play with.
You say 2 ball and foursomes, is that another way of saying fourball or is it 4 players with 2 balls?

I'm sure it is a wonderful club Snelly but the no 3 ball rule just seems pointlessly anal

I believe it's a pace of play thing. 2 ball matches only - foursomes etc

I'm pretty sure Littlestone used to be like this but have recently relaxed the rules.. maybe the tide is turning :)

I played in a four ball at my home course over the summer, one of our 4 plays once a year - in this very game and so play can get a little slow.

As we'd just played off the first tee and were about to set of walking a two ball arrived, I told them that at any point, should they catch us up we'd play them through or they could play up now and shoot ahead on the 2nd tee. They were very grateful of my offer and chose to wait for us to clear the first green.

We never really saw them after that and managed to get around the course in a reasonable time. and I think this is the surely the point and definition of etiquette in action - being aware of those in front and behind and making sure you are not interfering with their pace of play.

The point I'm trying to make is that you should not have to ask and more than 4-balls should never matter if the group is applying good etiquette.

Hunstanton Golf Course near to me is a 2 ball only course apart from Tuesdays I think when you can ring up and ask to play as a 3 ball but it is not always granted I am led to believe.

Littlestone is still like that.
Twoball or foursomes only, I think they allow three and fourball play on Wednesdays

I seem to remember doing something similar, possibly a five or six ball at Craigielaw a few years back. Those of us who hadn't finished due to the weather, went back out and played the 17th, which was a nearest the pin hole and then playing in the 18th.

Must be a GM Forum Outing tradition then ;)

PS the weather was really really bad that day.... MikeH used to be 6'4" before he shrank in all that rain ;)

While in general I agree with what imurg says, however the worry for me is. What happens if people start to think it’s the norm it then begins to happen a lot, and on from that. Can you be sure these people will always let you through.. We seem to have difficulty enough getting let through much of the time as it is and I accept that is a generalisation…These issues are to my mind the thin edge of the wedge but that’s just one opinion.
