• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Equipment test panel

I didn't apply, it all seems a bit sad really, humphing gear around in December when the clubs should be locked away in the shed until April.
I can hit my irons brilliant one day and crapola the next, how us rank amateurs are supposed to give a valid opinion on the merit of different clubs, particularly in winter, is beyond me. Get a grip forum, you're behaving like lab rats that have been given an extra grain pellet!

Oooh, birdieman. You're missing the point, aren't you?

I'm guessing all the manufacturers already have their Tour Staff's opinion on any new clubs. Frankly, though, that's not their target market. It's us! The average Joe who dips their hand in their pocket to buy the stuff.

No point asking Segio Garcia how he hits a game improvement iron. But there's a lot of point asking an 18 handicapper how much it helps. A good review will help their profits. And I'm willing to be a lab rat if I'm given the choice.

For all of those not chosen (including me) just remember we may get chosen later in the season as all the manufacturers begin to role out their FULL 2008 range. And the weather will be better. And the nights longer. And... I think I'll stop now!!

Birdiman whats up mate? crap day at work or something? been out shopping all night with the Mrs and wanted to let of some steam?

Relax!, your telling you would say no to testing the new Ping range???

Come on join in and have some fun, we have an opportunity to contribute to a magazine that we all love and want help in any way.

Personally I think it's a great idea to give the amateur golfers of the GM Forum the opportunity to 'test drive' new kit.

I look forward to reading the reviews in the New Year.

DHM.

Birdieman, if we agreed with everything you said then life would be all that duller. (We know you're a shepherd not a sheep!)

Seriously, though, I think you've missed a trick. The kit isn't all gonna be clubs.

Like you(possibly), I'm pretty happy with my own kit nowadays so far as clubs are concerned. It's all pretty new and mostly custom fitted so Mike's e-mail mentioned that he took account of that when dishing out the trial gear.

Not sure I would enjoy being tempted by shiny new woods or irons when I've just spent a fortune on new stuff this year... but I'm delighted to test out clothes, bags and shoes etc. You not interested, even slightly?

I have also received the tap on the shoulder- i am to test The TaylorMade Burner Draw 9.5 degree loft with a Fujikura stiff shaft.

As we have to produce a photo we should be able to put names to faces and products when the reviews come out.

Cant wait for the ball to start rolling with this one, Im not one for changing clubs to the latest version just for the hell of it. I can see this being a healthy experiment which will be a learning experience for myself and hopefully others who have not played with certain brands in a few years. The driver I will be receiving shortly, I have a mizuno 3 wood which lays in the closet month after month. Picking up a new mizuno driver actually fills me with anticipation as Its a brand that populated the majority of positions in my bag a few years ago, only getting shunted when I gave the game up and picked up the tm's fairly cheaply when I restarted.

Birdieman what you do that for? I like many others really enjoy your moans and opinions. You have an opinion that holds a lot of weight on this forum and it would be a great shame if you regress back to pingpal.

I Think Medway Jon Should have been Selected . as he deals with motors he can test all the Golf Bags and trolleys and See what motors they will and wont fit in!!
What an Idea!

Sorry htl, it was a stupid comment I put up, it was meant to be funny (but wasn't) and reads worse than it was supposed to sound if you know what I mean. You'd think i would have learned by now!
Anyway don't want to be the Xmas Grinch and destroy your testing fun, hope you all enjoy your products.
My wife does call me Victor from time to time after another cantankerous old git!

Guys

Don't worry if you haven't heard from me yet - the first 12 I have contacted is just for testing of kit that will be featured in the April and May issues that we need to get cracking on - and this is a series that will run for at least a year

with regard to keeping the gear - obviously we aren't going to ask for shoes, clothing and balls back and I'd sincerely hope that you will get to keep drivers, irons sets etc you have been sent to test.

We just need to cover ourselves in the event of one of the brands needing the item back

cheers
MikeH

Mike, Id just like to say thanks for giving us this opportunity when you could quite easily have given these perks to your mates down the club. Ive only been a member here for a few months but I have to say its been an excellent start.
BTW see if this driver is pants, you will be getting it back regardless :D
