Electrician advice please

I have a detached garage
The elec supply goes from the main house under the path into the garage at low level, and then up to a Fuse Box type thing with a red switch

From the fuse box thing, goes 2 cables to 2 light switches , which both control a single central light bulb from the central rafter.
Also from the fuse box is a cable to a double plug socket

A while back, when switching on one of the lights there was an audible "pop" and the light blew.
I have replaced the bulb but it does not work
The electric sockets do however still work
It does not matter which switch I use , the light will not work

Any suggestions on what might be wrong?

Probably a cable fault, causing an RCD to switch out.

When you say 'fuse box' it could many things for a simple switched junction box, to a fused switch, or a full blown garage type rcd consumer unit (and they come in a variety of types too).

Sounds more like you have tripped a fuse/rcd, which could either be in your garage, or in your main consumer unit (depending on how your garage supply is wired). Easiest to check the main consumer unit first, as most modern units are accessible and easy to indentify a tripped circuit.

Check for a blown fuse in the box. Turn off the electric in the house first. If the fuse is a cartridge type put a new one in: try again

Is the fuse box in the garage a grey metal box with the red on off switch, this is more than likely to have two fuses in it. Depending on how old it is this could be re-wireable fuse, cartridge fuse or MCB breakers inside. There is a chance the lamp blew and took the fuse out on the surge when it failed.
As the socket works it is likely only local to the garage. If you pop a piccy on here I may be able to shed some more light on this for you.

Didn't notice the sockets still work, so definitely contained within the garage

sounds like the lamp going has blown the fuse in your garage fuse box as the socket still works will not be the rcd inside the house,remove the cover and there will be a fuse for the lights (5amp) and one for the socket (30amp) sounds like a rewirable fuse from the description so just replace broken fuse wire with new.the new regulations have change now so i would strongly recommend having a new rcd board fitted or the very least a rcd controlled socket.

White box with two red lever switches, both currently in the ON position, in the garage
Nothing tripped in the main fuse box in the house

House is circa 8 years old

Sounds like shouldn't be a big job then, by I' ll get someone sensible to do it

Does sound like the switches should be MCB's so these should reset easily. It may be worth switching them on and off, sometimes they trip but don’t move the switches. Have to say I expected there to be three switches one main isolator for the board and one MCB for each circuit, Lights / Sockets

This really does sound like the lamp blew and took out the trip.

Whatever you do take care when working with electricity as it is very dangerous, not telling you to suck eggs but dont want you to get a shock and get hurt.

Ok, just tried to reset the switches (off then on) no difference
Front of panel /box doesn't come off easily so I'm not going to force that
Will get an elecy to have a look

Not a problem.

From what you have said I cant see it being too much of a job, hope everything gets sorted soon.
