If your little girl likes Harry Potter, I'd definitely recommend the tour, My boy loved it a couple of years ago.
They put you in teams and you have a quiz on the way round, my boy smashed it, know one even came close

Surgeons Hall museum is also fascinating. It’s just up Nicholson Street from the National Museum and contains loads of gruesome stuff as well as the educational elements.

Recommend this also, there's something strangely enjoyable about these places

How busy was it? Last few times I've been there it was so busy that it was not enjoyable.

Massive queues to get in when I passed it Friday evening and Saturday lunchtime.

Take the child up the Scott Monument in Princes Street......that will tire him/her out for the rest of the day.
Good tram service that links up Leith and the airport for getting about.
Car is a bit restricted in the town centre.

Some great views from the top too. Although not much room.
