Dung - Rules Question

lol at the lost the plot. but on the other hands there is using the rules to your advantage. our par 3 8th has a path to the left of the green, slopes left to righ with a bank to the right of the green, its narrow but a deep green, but generally is impossible to hit when dry as your coming from an elevated tee and cannot stop the ball. on last months medal not one person stopped on this green.

The best way to play it this time of year is drop it on the bank to the left of the green and let it drop in. last time i played i dropped it on the top of the bank and a dead bounce left me with a crap lie for my 2nd shot. now if i played a pitch and run off the back foot my leading left foot would have been in contact with a sleeper thats on the edge of the path. No way would i have played the shot that way but under the rules the path and fencers/sleepers are then allowing a free drop. I took the drop which gave me a better lie. was that cheating.

Strictly speaking, yes it was. Either that or bending the rules depending on your point of view.

The rules say the interference should be using the club and stance that you'd use if the obstruction wasn't there.

As a side, I know a member at Knowle Park, and there is no relief from deer droppings, it has to be played as it sits. Messy!

100% correct MWJ.

Re the OP, I was under the impression that if the ball was unplayable in the bush or whatever, then the fact that dung interfered with the playing of the shot is irrelevant. If the shot is playable then OK take free relief if allowed but within 1 club length from the nearest point of relief, not nearer the hole. If this spot is still within the bush, tough.

Noted, thanks for clearing that up

Another vote for oddsocks here, relief from dung is one thing but to get a drop out of the gorse sounds wrong to me.

The rabbit scraping situation was a wrong call too. If the shot you played to the green with your wedge was impossible due to reasons other than the rabbit scraping my opinion is no drop, rabbit scrapings or no rabbit scrapings. This is an all too misunderstood rule.

Far too much dung!!

I just have to read the rule book, get confused and realise it's me who's dung!! It normally takes two or three reads of a particular rule to understand.

Really dung on my part.

Is it the fact that they over complicate the rules and write them in shakespearian old English

" thou shall receive a courtesy drop if one discurtious rabbit should foul in an inconvenient area "

Take relief if its a local rule, one club from the nearest point and if it is still unplayable drop under penalty. I have to say eve if I didn't say it I'd be hoping that it was unplayable as it does seem against the spirit (if not the rules) to hit it into a rubbish position and get a get out of jail card
