Just back from a good game there.
Course is playing very well and the greens were first class, very fast for this time of year.
Teed off at 9am, one other couple in front, 3 hour round.

They are doing a Spring Offer of £35 a round weekday 9am to 9.30 am. Very good offer for those who want a tough test of golf.

Coming to Ayrshire in late May, its on the possibles list. The other is Greenock in an open on the Sunday.

Is it as good as the pictures on the website. I love picturesque courses, but is the course good also?

its tough but I wouldnt call it picturesque! depending upon what you want I'd play Greenock as that has some stunning views on a hilly course and your playing in an open so course will be in good nick and you might win something! completely different type to Dundonald, its comparing apples and oranges!

With the best will in the world you could not call Dundonald picturesque.
There is a huge paper mill on the east side of the course which reminds you of some early scenes in The Deer Hunter. The west coast railway line and embankment are to the west but above that are some nice views across the Firth of Clyde towards Holy Island and Arran.
The design of the course is good so you seem to be playing each hole in isolation and the 'artificial' dunes shield you from the worst of the paper mill.
Not a course for the faint hearted. We played off the club tees and both struggled to break 100 off 14 and 18 handicap. We played reasonably well although the fast greens caught me out. I took three to get down from within 40 yards of the flag on many occasions. The pins were tucked away on the edges so we had a hint of an excuse.

May is peak time up here so try to get some early booking deals if you can.

havent played dundonald, but surely at some point on the course directly west of the papermill is perhaps one of the most picturesque courses in Ayrshire/Scotland, Western Gailles imo

I would imagine that the Pro's will not want to be drawn Dundonald as a final Open Qualifier in 2016.
Definately the toughest course I have played [and I've played a few good uns]

Sorry, my wording wasn't up to scratch.

By picturesque I meant Greenock, not Dundonald. I've seen the pictures of Greenock on the net and it looks great, and so do the holes. I just wanted to make sure that the course was also good.

I will probably book in the open this week, going on any recommendations on here as we will definitely be there on the Sunday, just a few other things to tie up, first.

Dundonald is tough but its fair. I also happen to think its a good golf course. The papermill is iconic, its a feature of all the good links in Ayrshire. Western and Glasgow Gailes, Barassie and Dundonald.

If your looking for vistas then head for Rothesay Golf Club on the Isle of Bute. Views into no less than 7 different counties, the Kyles of Bute, Loch Striven, the Cumbraes, Mull of Kintyre. Just simply stunning on a nice day.

Having played it and caddied over it for the last four years I have watched the course and especially the greens improve year on year. It is one of favourite courses and I love being out on it.

Looking forward to the next forum meet there!

One of my favourite courses and a good test of golf, always play no to bad there either. Millport is a cracking course for views on Cumbrae.
