Yep superb course and I always enjoyed a round at £40 in the winter season until it got the Scottish Open and raised the prices.

Hoping that they do a great value stay and play deal- would make for a brilliant forum meet. I very much doubt mugs like us with be their target audience.

It’s their course, they can do what they like with it. I guess current members will be off to Barassie or Gailes now.

Similarly here. Only played it the once, think I was around level par for 17 holes, but scored double digits on 10.

Prefered it to Western gailes, if I'm honest.

Yet it strangely doesn't feature in the GM top 100 despite being a better test of golf.

Clubhouse must gain you a hell of a lot of extra points!

With it going private now, it won't be eligible for the GM list but I would agree that the course is worthy of the list.

It was before I was a reviewer, so cant possibly comment :), but even being not marked as well as others on facilities, IMHO the course is top 100. (y)

When rating a course, surely it is the course that counts?

You are rating a golf course, not a Clubhouse or a practice area or a welcome. So for me you are absolutely spot on. However since someone has decided it's not up for debate we'll leave it at that even if you are correct.

Not sure it's going private. Seems more of a corporate or business oriented venture where you can pay on or stay in the lodges and play golf.

It's a shame the west coast links options for members is so limited compared with East Lothian or Fife.
West kilbride, irvine bogside, western gailes, Glasgow gailes, barassie, troon munis, troon portland, royal troon, prestwick st.cuthberts, prestwick st.nics, old prestwick, turnberry. Still quite a few courses on/near the coast I've missed. I'd hardly say it was a limited choice myself but what do I know

That's fine, but most of these are £1,000+ assuming you can get in, which you can't for a host of places you've mentioned.

In Fife or East Lothian you will get a huge range of decent links at £500 to £700 per annum.

Lundin Links £535 pa
Kilspindie £525 pa
Even North Berwick is £640 pa, albeit with a waiting list and tee times will be tough to come by.

Kilmarnock Barassie - £1,200 pa
Irvine Bogside - £1,000+ pa

Obviously not the full picture, but golf in the west seems crazy expensive compared with the huge range of affordable options in the East.

In the future, if I could justify the time, I'd love to have a links membership as a second membership, and keep my home course as well.

Appreciate clubs charge what they charge and it's up to them and it's probably still a fragile existence for members clubs, but seems there is a huge imbalance. It can't cost a lot more money to run Lundin or Kilspindie compared with Barassie or Irvine... so why the huge difference?

i think Lundin and Kilspindie have waiting lists and you will need a fair few introductions to get in both and Joining fee's Lundin is £800 plus, not sure about the other two but wouldn't mind betting they do.

The prices in Fife are due to a lack of population. There aren't enough local golfers to keep all the clubs going here, our memberships are propped up by country members, without them half the clubs wouldn't exist. So they're priced to attract people looking for a second membership or those willing to travel

It isn't all good value though. There's an argument that £500 is twice the price of what some of the clubs are worth but I won't go there.

Anyway, shame about Dundonald, one of the most enjoyable courses I've played and massively underrated.

I didn't realise this was about price ? Many of these clubs have very very good deals for juniors and young adults. I'm a member of one of these clubs and was also a member of another of them for a number of years. Golf is more expensive in central and west Scotland, it's the most densely populated area of the country and so demand for good courses is higher and they charge a higher price. If you take barassie, its 1200 a year ok, well what do you get 27 links holes open all year, championship test of golf and a good practice facility with 2 full greens aswell as a very large putting green. Let's take a course on the Southside of Glasgow, say east renfrewshire, that's what 1050 or 1100 a year and for 4 months of the year it's hardly playable, the practice area sits on rock and isnt usually dry until late April. Most courses on the Southside are similar prices, though without the joining fee of east ren. What's offering value here ? It's not really comparable to compare to price on the other side of the country, you can only compare to relatively local competition as prices vary locally for land and all the rest of it
