As our omniscient authorities have decided to declare all bunkers GUR, they have also added drop zones on some of them.
Do drop zones have to be used if they are marked..?
I went in a bunker today and my NPR would have given me a much easier shot than the one I played from the DZ.....

It entirely depends on the Local Rule. Does it say the player must use the DZ or may use it? Your Committee should make it clear.

That'll be a first......
There's no sign, notice or anything else to say one way or the other.
If I ever find anyone who might know the answer I'll ask..!

The USGA/R&A say "Generally, such dropping zones should be provided as an additional relief option to those available under the Rule itself, rather than being mandatory."

However, the committee may feel that the relief taken under rule 25-1b may give the player an unearned advantage if the npr + 1cl takes the bunker out of the line of play.

And it is only fair if your getting a free drop from a bunker that drop zone should be in a position that you have to go over the bunker. I'd be annoyed if my opponent got a free drop after hitting a poor shot into a bunker and it left him with an easy little chip up the green.

i think your committee should be enforcing the drop zone, not just letting take NPR.

Imurg purely out of curiosity, how do you know the bunkers are GUR if you haven't seen the local rule (that would contain the answer to your original Q)

Have they physically marked each as GUR or has the decision only been communicated through word of mouth?

Well, some are marked, some are not, some have drop zones, some don't...and its not necessarily the ones that are marked that have the drop zones!!
There is a sign at the check-in counter simply stating that all bunkers are GUR until further notice...no mention of drop zones..we didn't realise there were drop zones until we accidentally found one...

I guess it doesn't matter as much being out of season for you guys but does seem a little off the cuff approach to local rules but I guess we've all seen the same approach from time to time
