I have been whacking the balls on driving range with Dunlop LoCo and quite please with how forgiven it is (I am rubbish!) However the club has a few dinks (previous owner)and I can't help but would like to try another one....bad work men blame tools and all that!

What are out there that easy to hit and has a BIG head like the LoCo but without costing me a fortune? (2nd hand even better, I am an Ebay king :)

Thx in advance gents

What is the main different between cheaper brands like above and The high-end gears like callaway, Nike etc...

Is it just a distance? if yes (roughly) how many yards? and which degree I should buy? the loco is 10 degree, Would 9 degree be to hard for a newbie to hit.
Sorry for so many questions but like my signature said...I need to be quite good by January!

not much really with lesser brand having quailty shafts in which is bery important, a lower loft generally is harder to square up but depends on each person, maybe going to 12 degrees will make you hit it further and straighter

As a beginner i was told to go for a higher loft for distance. I use a 10.5 but if it wasn't a 2nd hand deal i would have gone higher i think. Distance comes down to the player mostly but i swapped froma hippo Howson driver of 10 degrees and consistently drive further but by how much i can't say it varies too much. Direction is what you want over distance. Ebay baragins i there if you look but be careful with fakes. Also try golfbidder.

I started in February and have dropped to a handicap of 19 so improving quickly is possible with enough practice but lessons are the key.

19 in few months...Wow Jim, that is very impressive! One of my regular drinker have been playing every week for 7 years and he is on 24 handicap.

I didn't realise there are fake golf clubs! That's bad and thx for warning.

Anything will be better than your current Driver. As is mentioned above give us a rough price of what is cheap in your eyes and we will try and point you in the right direction.

cheap clubs, like your loco, have cheap shafts and are generally made of cheaper materials. None of which will help you.

the 'cheaper' brands quoted on the thread, Benross, Orka etc do not fall into this category. they are quality kit that are cheaper because they save on advertising and sponsorships.

if you are going to buy a new club get them to at least put you on the 'swing meter' to make sure you get the right shaft for your swing speed. otherwise get a regular shaft, minimum loft 10.5.

How much?? I haven't a clue! If you ask me what is the best cd player for around £3K I would tell you just like that but golf clubs...like I said too new to know! All I want is something that will last me a year or so!

I have a quick hunt and I found new Cobra F Speed LD Drivers for £100! Is that a good club for the price? I seem to hit toward right hand side and the average distance on the range is 150 - 175 yards.

thx again, you gents are so helpful :)

CC is cubic capacity - ie size of head - generally bigger is more forgiving. The ones with High MOI are also very forgiving.

If you can get a Cobra LD for £100 try the mout they are great clubs, only draw back is the noise of those ones - this stoped them from selling as well last year hence the 50% off.

Regarding second hand kit - ebay is full of fakes so traat with caution. I can recommend Golf bidder ( www.golfbidder.co.uk) They might be more expensive than ebay and some special offers in shops might be cheaper than they are selling second hand kit, but they do not sell fakes.

Go to American golf etc and see what they think would suit your swing. Generally more loft is easier to hit - ie 12deg is easier to go straight than 9 deg.

Also if you want to play competative golf make sure the driver is conforming to the new rules - there are plenty of illegal ones floating about.

Hole it helps.

cc is the volume (size) of the head of a driver.
max legal is 460 cc.
manufacturers like to produce differently shaped heads, which they all claim to be the best, so this is just about the only common way to describe one.
most modern drivers are 460 as, generally speaking, they are more forgiving because they have a bigger 'sweet spot' - the part of the club face that is supposed to contact the ball.

I would go for the new Benross driver if you want to buy some new gear its about £100

If you want 2nd hand, we have a Nike SQ on our buy / sell section, one of our members is selling it and it is definitely a decent whacking stick.
