I have the XLS driver 3 and 5 woods although the driver has been usurped by the TM R7 Limited. I like them and get a reasonable distance with the 3 and 5 and find them easy to hit.
As I see it there are several avenues open to you
1) Go to a pro and have a lesson on driving
2) Ditch the driver completely and hit a 3 or 5 wood (not bad in this weather but restrictive in Winter)
3) Get a C/F driver suited to your swing (risky if you then improve/have lessons and your technique changes significantly)
4) Shop around for a higer lofted driver (11-13 degrees) to get more forgiveness and more of a compromise with a standard 15 degree 3 wood
I'm going to stick my neck out and say buy a driver.
1) 3 woods are not that big, even my 185cc TM whopper takes a good centre hit to hit sweetly.
2) big headed drivers are actually easier to use off a nice high tee, and I've heard endless Pro's say this.
3) if you aren't going to buy both, buy a friendly high loft driver and some nice pink or silver tees and go and have some fun.
4) I learned golf the "old fashioned way" of using a 3 wood most of the time until my swing was acceptably reliable to use a driver.......things have moved on since then.

IF you could buy a 460cc 3 wood with 15 degrees intended solely to use off the tee for beginners, I'd say get something like this....but you can't.
Im in the same boat as you, but I have one and I'm afraid to use it.
My problem is that I went to the driving range hit around 30 balls with it and didnt get the ball over about 10 feet from the ground. Its back to the range Saturday for 120 balls!!!
Since you say you are relatively new, my suggestion would be don't spend too much yet. And the Benny driver (Ben Sayers) is a fantastic club for its price (about £80). As are the Benny 3 & 5 woods - just bought the woods for £59.95 They really are good clubs, and at that price you can't go wrong. You can always go more up market later - if you decide you want to.
Hey guys, nice to see similar interests on here. Borntorunsean, I'm a massive boss fan too. Love to see the pics of the burner wood, I'll PM you my email.
ColeTrain, I feel your pain. I see you're in notts and assume you're a massive GOW fan. Me too. Where do you play?
Backwoodsman, I won't be spending alot, I'll get a clearance driver for under 100 if I get one at all. I've seen the Bennys though and intend to try them. They had an almost new one second hand in our club shop for 40 quid last week but I missed it. Anyone tried the innovator from Ben sayers?
