I’m looking into getting a new driver pretty soon.

I would look into getting a proper fit as I’ve had a fitting with my irons and can’t fault them at all. Has anyone had a driving fitting and how did they find it?

It’s such a shame that you can’t get a fit on last years models of clubs instead of having to fork out £500+ for a driver as they only tend to fit the latest models

I had a Titleist fitting for a driver and really enjoyed the experience to be fair. It seems to be straighter than my previous driver and more forgiving on slight miss hits. Maybe straighter due to the stiff shaft whereas I had regular before. It also has an adjustable hosel and weight track but I’ve no need to tinker just yet.

Sounds good. So was it just the standard stiff shaft you had? Any other adjustments to the length? Did you try any other brands to compare stats in the fitting or was it just titleist

Our pro has a GC quad and will fit any driver you bring along with you or anything he has kicking around - new models or old.
He'll charge for it, but as it's effectively a lesson it's well worth it. Any modern driver with a bit of adjustability can be set up to suit the average hack.

Surely that wouldn’t be a driver fitting though? As far as I’m aware a driving fitting would be trying different shafts etc different heads, different brands and finding what fits best for you

It was one of the standard offerings a Hzrdus Red CB. I’m standard length so no adjustments needed. Just got 3 tapes under the grip. So far really pleased with it. I didn’t feel the need to look at other brands tbh, I’d always fancied a Titleist driver so bought one. The weight track is set one notch toward toe as thats where I strike. And 0.75 toe down(flat) if I remember correctly.

The bolded part would suggest that it would be a fitting.... If he's a club pro, he may be limited with options though. It is also possible that your current driver may prove to be the best fit for you.

If you want the full fitting experience, i.e. trying 10 different heads in 20 different shafts, you'll probably want to go to a specialist fitter that is geared up for that. Generally that will cost, although they may offer you the fitting cost off the price of the new driver. There are places that do free fittings, they're not all bad but you generally gets what you pays for.

Our pros have a choice of about 5-6 different club makers. If you factor in different drivers, you get a good selection. Another factor is eg Ping. At the moment there clubs have dropped in Price (G425) in anticipation of the new clubs coming out. You may well be surprised how cheap your choice may be.
Enjoy the experience. ?

I had a fitting at House of Golf in Manchester. I ended up using the data he gave me for a Mizuno STx 220 . He quoted me £299 . I bought exact same spec club online for £215. I think that’s a great price for Mizuno up to date driver . It’s not the longest driver out there but it’s so forgiving.

That seems remarkably cheap for an OEM driver.

Why didn't you ask the fitter to match the price?

Never crossed my mind too . I was happy with the deal I got . I bought it from a online golf pro
Lesson learned, earn some loyalty from your local guys.

When I used to do this many years ago, I still recall this one guy who came in multiple times to try out a set of Callaways, eventually stopped coming, clearly was using us and then buying online. The funny (ha ha) thing was, we were on maximum discount from manufacturers, we'd have matched, probably beat what he ended paying online, but instead had to be a sneak. And that's why folks nowadays have to pay for fittings.

When I had my fitting at Birkdale for my Mizunos 923s. He said straight away he would price match the cheapest online . Had had done my homework and knew Hotgolf were the cheapest. The fitter went on computer and checked Hotgolf price and said he could match . We did the deal there and then . The fitter for my driver should have mentioned he would price match I then would have gine back to him . I payed for my fitting so don’t feel as thou I was being sneaky

during COVID lockdown I was looking for a Truss putter. I saw them advertised on Facebook marketplace. So alarm bells started ringing. however when checking where they were from most of the sites were golf clubs throughout the UK. I called a golf club which redirected me to the pro and lo and behold within the week. My Truss putter turned up at a much lower price than most places. Having looked on FB marketplace there are quite a few clubs still being sold by golf clubs Pros.
PS, the truss putter was rammel and I sold it 2 months later for the same price as I bought it

I’m seeing some offering in the north east fitting old stock in a sale. Obviously you are slightly restricted in what they have left but it’s a good way of getting a good fitter at a cheaper price I thought.

Also most decent places are now charging for the fit so, using the example about of the £299 driver for £215. A proper fitting is usually £75 upwards these days, taken off the price if you buy from them. In this scenario you save the saving is £9! Worth that for when you go back for something else and maybe get a bit of loyalty discount.
