At the start of my downswing I have a tendency to slide or shift my hips forward to my left side and then I rotate my hips.
Does anyboady have a drill to stop this?
Sorry for the blunt post and I dont have any current swing videos to show you :(

I may be talking out of my ass, but i'm sure thats what I used to do and the pro who got me to stop doing it had me adress the ball as normal, then before the backswing move my right foot 6 inches back which promotes a flatter swing (i think - it was a while ago) then over time gradually move you're foot further forward until you have your feet parallel again and dont slice anymore.

You slide your hips towards the target, or out towards the ball?

Get an old shaft or long piece of cane and when in the address position stick it in the ground next to your left hip. Use this as a 'barrier' to stop you sliding , you could always use one for your right hip at the same time , this will give you a good idea of how much movement your hips do in the backswing and follow through.

This drill ruined my game for 16 years :D :D

Take a look at Goosen's hips. See the guy in the red cap behind? Goosen's hips SLIDE that far down the target line before he even gets them to open (they are still square).

What you will notice also (if you look carefully) is that Goosen's eyes are right over the ball at the top of his backswing and still over it on the way down. He doesn't let his head (upper center) move forward of the ball, only the hips (lower center), which gives him huge leverage and clubhead speed.

There is nothing wrong with sliding the hips towards the target in fact I would encourage it as you need to get your weight moving forward through the shot, onto your left side at the finish.

It is however crucial that you don't slide your hips on the TAKEAWAY of the swing... just turn them open as the shoulders/spine dictate.

Well that was me told then wasn't it :D

LOL.. No offence, I'm a miserable git... who can't hit the ball for toffee (as you'll see for yourself on Wednesday! Woohoo!!)

Let's hope that Walton Heath isn't as hard as Wentworth... don't really fancy shooting a 99 :D

That drill is definitely obsolete though. If you look at Goosen at the top of his backswing and put an imaginary shaft in the ground by the side of his RIGHT shoe, his hip would be nowhere near. If you put one beside his LEFT shoe he would have knocked it over before he even makes contact with the ball.

JUOK with all due respect maybe Goosen isn't the best example to use of the modern swing, he's as old as me!

This link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqmejmw-lu4 shows Anthony Kim, forward it to 34 seconds in and watch the guy behind him to see how little hip slide there is, it's all rotation.

For me sliding was the main cause of some shanking problems, by not clearing hips I was not leaving enough room to get the club to the ball effectively. I think a quieter lower half is a good thing, I like Stuart Applebys' swing as one to copy.

Dont know if the canes ideas work but a decent pro I saw quite recently went through Hogans idea with me of an imaginary elastic cord from your left hip to a wall behind you - as you start downswing the idea is that the stretched cord you've tensioned in the backswing pulls your left hip quickly backwards (not toward target) to create a good hip turn clearing to allow arms to fall into the correct position. Make any sense? :p

OK.

The light blue line represents a shaft by the right foot that he is nowhere near. (same as Goosen)

The red line shows the position of his NOSE (same as Goosen)

The yellow line shows the hip movement, you need to look at the legs of the guy in the background. I'd say that was 4 or 5 inches (same as Goosen)

It might not be EXACTLY the same distance that Goosen slides because the stance being wider for the driver (to maintain balance) will restrict the hip movement somewhat but he is going for it just as much as Goosen is.... and the camera is further away :D

You need to take the ball position out of the equation.. he is swinging just the same as usual but will catch the ball ascending a few degrees.

Also look how much his left knee moves compared to the tee box marker behind him! I'd probably snap my leg if I did that
