I've got quite a poor start to my backswing, I'm currently working on not swaying off the ball and starting the downswing with the hips.

I've noticed in a video of my swing that my backswing is inside and the club face closed, anyone got any drills that I could do to ingrain a better start to the backswing?

I was thst way too. In my recent lessons the pro told me I needed to get my hands higher & in front of the ball at address. Doing this, for some reason, gets the club going away much more on a square path. This works especially well on short pitches & also seems to help set the wrists properly, instead of letting them roll. The feeling is completely different for such a small change.

One simple on I use is to place a ball or tee 9 inches behind the ball but inline with the target and make sure you touch the ball or tee on the back swing. It seems to set the club on a nice plane for me

This is an area I'm currently working on as well, fresh back from the range not an hour ago. Whilst doing these various things to correct takeaway plane/clubface/keeping connected, I was still struggling to find good contact. In my lesson on Wednesday, the pro saw my head was dipping. This hunched me over, making it very awkward to return the clubface to the ball easily, led to early extension and poor contact.

Now I'm working on the feel of staying tall in the backswing, engaging my abs for core stability, and making sure my right hip still rotates backwards towards the top. With that one modification of feeling tall plus the work I'd been doing before, I'm seeing good results.

I hit 50 balls at the range today, and I'd say by the 25th/30th slow practice movements I was getting used to the changes and could start increasing my speed. By the 50th I was happy!
