Had a lesson with my Pro on the weekend and the main problem with my swing seems to be that my right elbow (i'm right handed) doesnt stay tucked in close to my body for long enough.

I hope this makes sense.

I'm really struggling with just thinking to myself keep it tucked in so wondered if anyone had a drill that i can use?

Doesn't sound like a good lesson if you didn't leave with a 100% "know-how-to-do-it" drill.

There's no reason why you can't practice with a headcover or similar under either armpit for sorting out your body/arm sync.

You can practise with one under your left arm, making 1/2 swings to keep your left arm across your chest.
You can do the same with the right arm to stop it becoming "disconnected" on the backswing.
You can pop one under both (or even have a towel across your chest under both) again to make small swings.

I've done the lot over the years. Totally brilliant drill(s).

I still do the "something in each arm pit making half swings" with short clubs. Works particularly well with 1/2 wedges.

Enjoy. :)

Funny you say that because its the half wedge shots that i'm struggling with and thats why i booked the lesson. I'm shanking my wedges or pulling them left and it's all down to my right elbow flying out during my back swing.

I was managing to keep my elbow tucked in during the lesson and was hitting the ball superb so i'd imagine thats why my pro didnt give me a drill however I went over the pitch and putt tonight to practise with my wedges and was back to my old ways.

Two things I can think of that might help instantly.

1) You are not bent forward at the waist enough, you are standing too tall.
2) You are trying to swing the club with your arms instead of turning your upper body.

Bend forward at the hips a little more and think of your left shoulder turning down towards the ball, your right elbow should then be glued to your ribs ;)

Hope this helps.

NB: It's OK for your right elbow to come away from your ribs a few inches, it doesn't need to literally be stuck there.

Yes, yes....good thought this one. If I turn properly with 1/2 wedge shots it's almost impossible to pull it. It's when I get all arms and wrists that I mess it up.

I'll be trying this advice on the range for the next couple of weeks, shanked and pulled my wedges through todays stableford and still walked off with 33 points....

My target of getting below 18 this year(currently 21.4) is do-able once i get these wedges sorted.
