Dress down days for golf clubs?

They would be against it, but of you had to put £2 into the captains charity (rather like mufty day at school ) I reckon it would swing it, for the charity of course

I agree, i think once a year where you could wear what you like is a good idea. They used to do it , in a non qualifying format, such as bowmaker, texas scramble and so, remember one member turned up and playing in speedo's

Thank you Rich, even once a year would be a good thing,it's nice to let your hair down and just have fun once in a while,no? Dunno about speedo's however, maybe going a bit too far?

I simply cannot believe some of the assumptions being made here, some of you really need to get a grip! This is a forum,I thought I would talk about an idea I had,not try to wind people up! Why this makes me narrow minded I cannot fathom.

If you don't want to wind people up then don't start your thread with statements like this:

"and perhaps a good thing for the old guard to appreciate the joys of casual attire? The whole shirt and tie in the bar brigade might just change their opinion a tad."

Seriously, how many people on here are members of clubs hat insist on jacket and tie in the clubhouse outside of presentation evenings or matches etc. I would be amazed if it's more than half a dozen, in fact, I'd be amazed if it's that many.

Deke, I don't have a problem with what you're suggesting, i.e. a change in the dress code for whatever reason and for however long. But as was pointed out above, and your support of other posts that have targeted the "shirt and tie brigade" etc is confrontational.

If you were putting in a proposal to an AGM that asked for a change of the dress code at x,y,z times because of the benefits it may bring to the club, and it was a reasoned argument, I wouldn't have a problem supporting it. But if it was worded to stuff it up the old codgers/jacket and tie brigade...

Forget the (narrow minded) attack on a particular section of the club, and put the proposal forward on its own merits. Note, I am one of the older brigade and I wear jeans, t-shirt and occasionally trainers to the club most evenings I go in there. And most committee meetings I attend at least half of us are in jeans.

Thanks for your reasonable post Hobbit.I am in no way supporting any other posters in attacking anyone,I have been away from the forum for ages and probably haven't read them anyway! SocketRocket, who are you to tell me how or what to post? This is a FORUM,a place for new ideas to be discussed in a reasonable manner. What is wrong with suggesting that a change of opinion can be a good thing? If my idea is so offensive to you feel free to ignore it!

You just don't get it. You started off making silly comments about certain people in golf clubs and then say that you aren't trying to wind anyone up. As you rightly suggest it is a FORUM, I have not told you how or what to post, I have just made clear my opinion on what you said, that's what happens on FORUMS. Where did I suggest that a change of opinion is a bad thing?

You just thanked Hobbit for pointing out to you that your post was confrontational. To conclude, there was nothing wrong with your suggestion on dress codes, it was just the way you tried to rubbish others that have a different opinion.

Get it now?

When did I rubbish anyone? I can't see a single example? By "shirt and tie brigade" I mean the type of golfer who would complain if I wore a spikeless shoe on the course or if I briefly had my polo untucked from my trousers! I have not singled out anyone for ridicule, and I have already stated I am for dress codes and I respect tradition.I do not appreciate your tone one bit Rocket,I am dealing with a death in the family at the moment and I am going through quite a bit of stress,I like to chat on forums to unwind and have friendly banter, not to have needless crap thrown at me for no reason.

Forget it

I really wish I had never started this thread! I put it up not long after my Dad died of cancer and I had a few ales on the night of posting.I don't think I explained myself very well, and I was unaware of other posts having a go at dress codes.I cannot fathom the level of negativity I received from some posters often making many incorrect assumptions! When i started posting on this forum it was a friendly place, with much good banter, but recently there is a lot more aggro, and needless criticism.I am glad many of my favourite posters are still here and I will continue to post as long as they contribute,I am sure they know who they are! Mods feel free to lock down!

As a recent member i find, that far too many comments on this forum are taken too seriously, and sarcastic, know all unfriendly comments are the replies .also too many CLIQUES use this site as their personal email.and old pals act. Ok thats the paper lit . ps i'm with you deke ive had a few beers too

,pps bet my previous threads are all being checked right now

Thanks for the support brother! There are still some diamond geezers on here, but the mood is not as good as it was a few years ago.

Hi forum. With a lot of recent chat about club dress codes being old fashioned and stuck in the past,do you think that a members dress down day once every couple of weeks or so would be a good compromise and perhaps a good thing for the old guard to appreciate the joys of casual attire? The whole shirt and tie in the bar brigade might just change their opinion a tad. What do you think? Is it worth suggesting to your club? Cheers

Hi Deke mate. Sorry for your loss. Been though the same thing last year with both parents.

I can see where you coming from with your post. But think it does fall down with the comments, on the old guard, shirt and tie brigade. It does make it sound as if you are having a pop at them?

The idea is sound if the membership agrees, But is it that or a dislike of the shirt and tie guys?

I was not going to post in this thread. But I do feel there is a case for "inverted snobbery" here. Also if people disagree, they are being aggressive. As you said this is a forum and you must except people will have, strong opposite views.

Deke I read your first post to mean you were asking if some clubs would dress down from Jacket and tie to smart casual (trousers and polo shirt)
Then a great idea from Oddsox about raising money for charity.

Sadly, the following posts seem to mis-read the OP and got all hot under the collar about jeans and football shirts.
You did try to get the thread back on subject ...

I am not talking about wearing jeans and football shirts, just an opportunity for a more relaxed atmosphere in the bar and a good way to raise cash for a decent cause.

But as these things go sometimes, your initial intent was lost.
If my club had a strict Jacket and tie rule and someone suggested a smart but casual night say once a month, I would support it all the way.
Nothing to do with jeans, trainers, football shirts or tattoos.

I do hear what you say though Deke, some members seem to be just out for an arguement sometimes.
If I were you Deke, I would put forward your idea to the committee in a clear manner mentioning that relaxed would in fact mean golf attire, not jeans etc and good luck with it. I hope it raises lots of money for your favourite charity.

What would be great for charity is people could wear the strip of their favorite sports club to play golf in. The best score (probably stableford) for a club wins the day and the winnings shared between all those who wore that clubs strip.

Thanks for your comments Dave,Bob,and ScienceBoy.I will take them all on board! Dave my first post was meant to taken with a bit of humour,I have nothing against any age group at all,and indeed I tend to enjoy banter with older golfers the most! People on here assume way too much.Bob you have totally understood my intent, many thanks, and ScienceBoy that is indeed a good idea mate, cheers!
