I suppose most peoples club summer comps will be drawing to an end next month.... believe ours is anyway.....
So as its my first winter in a club what should i work on over the winter.......
As i wont be hanging up the boots for the bad weather ill be using the course as my practice ground........

Also can your handicap be cut during the winter

It all depends on what you struggle with to be honest. Get your short game razor sharp for next season and you will see you handicap drop a lot. Just work on keeping the ball in play also(helped me a lot this year) as this will drop your handicap quite a bit. Your handicap can be cut but only for a winter handicap, which you will find will be lower than normal as you will be playing a shorter course. Your original handicap will be in play soon as the white tees are moved back to their normal positions at the start of next season. Hope this helps :)

Thanks Owen!
My short game could certainly do with a polish......

I am going to tkae time to heal as have been suffering from tennis elbow, last few winters worked on grip change, swing change and short game! loads to choose from mate, pick what you stuggle with and go from there!

I don't understand this "Winter Handicap" that I keep hearing about on this forum. Surely if your course is playing shorter over the winter the CSS will be less if it is easier? I play in a winter league and I still play to my National Handicap. As long as there are full greens and tees there shouldn't be any difference from the summer. :D

Your handicap can be cut but only for a winter handicap

You what? :D

If your course is playing full length with proper greens then your handicap can go up or down as it does in summer. You only have one official handicap. Our medals are played at full length all year and handicaps are adjusted accordingly. I'm guessing a 'winter handicap' is an internal club thing some clubs use if they can't play the course at the required length to be a qualifier or have temporary greens. If you're playing the full course then I would think under CONGU rules you have to adjust h'caps otherwise come next spring your h'cap will be false.

CSS can only come down 1 below SSS. If the course is playing too short, I think more than 100yds less than the measured distance then it can't be a h'cap qualifier. I think there is a rule about temp greens and h'cap qualifying as well but not sure.

I think it's important to just keep a swing going over the winter. If you want to make any changes then fine do so but golf is about enjoyment/excercise and escaping from the wife and kids for 3-4 hours.

Winter golf can be cold and wild at times, that's why I believe you need to enjoy it more than the summer, making changes and struggling in 2 degrees on brick hard fairways with frozen hands is not fun in my opinion.

Just enjoy your winter golf, keep the swing free.

Also can your handicap be cut during the winter

Too right it can (at mine anyway).

Some courses might suspend adjustments, but we play on full greens all year and it's much easier off the mats.

But what confuses me dave is i thought that when handling the ball for L-C-P conditions it cant be cut.......Or is there other rules that cme into play :D

Sorry Dave Lift Clean and Place conditions

Preferred/winter lies. I guess it's down to each committee. Ours don't stop h'cap adjustments on days when there is a notice saying preferred lies. Nor do they give a damn about winter mats....which is bad for me, as the course is short off the mats, the tee shots are far more straightforward, etc.etc.

We play medals and stablefords all year and are qualifying for handicap purposes unless they have to move to temp greens. We don't have any temporary tees at all.

As such we don't have an end of season. There is a cut off point for the OOM points (not a problem for me this season!) but apart from that its business as usual. I'm pretty happy with my swing right now and shock horror don't want to make to many changes to it. The only thing I want to look at is the downswing and this move up and out I've inherited for the last xx years. Last year my swing was still a mess but this year it is starting to gel. I might get a short game and putting lesson before next season but otherwise I'll use the range if the course becomes too wet to play and keep the swing ticking over.
